The advertisement indicating that the editor had changed from Edward Wedlake Brayley 1773-1854 to Joseph Nightingale 1775-1824 during the writing of this volume is dated 1814. Plates include views of: St. Paul's Cathedral; Merchant Taylors' School; Ironmonger's Hall and many other guild halls in London; the Royal Exchange; the Bank of England; Lothbury Court; and the East India House. Blue ribbon bookmarks. Front fixed endpapers bear small binder's label: Douron Relieur Grenoble. Half title and title page in volume one and two initial pages in volume two bear the purple stamp of former owner Philip Bayard which contains his name in Roman letters with additional lettering in Arabic. Philip Bayard 1872-1911 was descended from a long line of political and financial leaders in Philadelphia and Delaware -- he was the son grandson brother and nephew of numerous prominent Bayards. From 1906 or earlier to 1908 he served as American Vice Consul General in Morocco where he probably acquired this and a number of other works in French which he marked with this distinctive stamp combining the Roman and Arabic alphabets. Tragically he died in 1911 having jumped or fallen from the third-floor window of a hospital in Washington D.C. These volumes comprise the 12th and final volume of this important history of France produced under the directon of French historians Ernest Lavisse and Alfred Rambaud. In Very Good- Condition: corners and joints are rubbed; front joint of volume two has separated but hinge is solid; spines and upper section of back cover of vol. 1 and of front cover of vol. 2 are sunned; pages are clean and bright. The book is in Near Fine Condition: front fixed endpaper stained by former presence of bookplate; small faint stain on front free endpaper; otherwise pages and plates are clean and bright. Dust jacket is in Fair Condition: 1.25 cm. lacking at head of spine; dampstain along upper edge of front section; chipped at tail of spine and lower edge of back section; several small tears with one archival repair to the inside; small section lacking along spine.
