Front free endpaper bears the names of two former owners: Thomas Drewry 1871 and Jesse Darbyshire 1901. A third name was erased at the head of that endpaper. The author states that about one third of these biographical sketches of early English Quakers first appeared in the Carlisle Journal. This is the first edition in book form. The appendix contains relevant excerpts from Besse's Sufferings. In Very Good- Condition: spine sunned; somewhat cocked; cover is slightly soiled; edges lightly rubbed; pp. 1-16 partially detached; pp. 154-55 have a shadow in the gutter from former newspaper bookmark; a few pencilled marginialia and occasional soiling in the margins. Contemporary half calf with gilt-tooled spine title; both gilt-tooled and blind-tooled spine decoration. Pink blue and white marbled paper in an unusual tiger pattern over boards. Dark blue and black marbled endpapers in a French shell pattern. Brown ribbon bookmark. Errata on final page. Lacking map. With: 2 slips stating "With the compliments of Professor W. Macneile Dixon" loose; one also has the emblem of John Lane Co. The Bodley Head New York City. William Macneile Dixon 1866-1946 was an English author and professor of English language and literature at the University of Glasgow from 1904 to 1935. The author Nicholas Charles Victor Oudinot duc de Reggio 1791-1863 was the son of Napoleon I's marshal Nicolas Oudinot. In 1814 at the end of the later Napoleonic campaigns he was promoted to major. He led the cavalry school at Saumur from 1822 to 1830 and was inspector general of cavalry from 1836 to 1848. Most significantly he commanded the eight to ten thousand French troops that besieged Rome in 1849 taking it back from the short-lived Roman Republic. Lacking map; otherwise in Very Good Condition: binding is rubbed with several scrapes in the paper over the boards; front joint just starting at head; clean and bright. 1898000792Paris: A. Lahure Imprimeur-Éditeur 1898. Paperback. Good. 4 172 6 p.: 24 leaves of tissue-guarded collotype plates many in-text drawings; 34 cm. Original brown paper covers with "Detaille" printed in black on the front cover. Colophon states: "Achevé d'imprimer le 30 Novembre 1897." Title page printed in red and black. A study of the work of French artist Edouard Detaille 1848-1912 who was the official painter of the battles of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 and became famous for his paintings of soldiers military life and manoeuvres and uniforms. This type of c. 1900 French publisher's insubstantial binding was meant to be replaced when the purchaser took the book to a bookbinder. It was not made to last for over a century and this one shows the expected signs of wear most significantly the loss of most of the paper over the spine and the resulting separation of the sections of the book. The volume is complete however with all 24 leaves of plates. In Good Condition with the binding as described: cover is soiled; fore-edges of some leaves slightly soiled and in a few cases slightly chipped; otherwise clean and bright. A.
