1926List3683New York: Edgar Leslie / Clarke & Leslie Songs Inc 1926. Folio sheet music illustrated color pictorial cover with portrait of Sammy Clark; with ukulele arrangement. Light wear and small creases; covers detached small tears at margins still bright and attractive. Fair to good. A lively novelty song from the height of the Jazz Age fascination with shifting gender roles written by lyricist Edgar Leslie and composer James V. Monaco and published in New York in 1926. The cover advertises the piece “as sung by Sammy Clark†the vaudeville performer associated with the Clarke & Leslie publishing enterprise. The lyrics belong to a genre of Jazz Age comic songs reacting to the rapid social changes of the 1920s when the emergence of the “flapper†produced widespread discussion about masculinity and femininity. Songs from the period often framed these developments humorously or anxiously and “Masculine Women! Feminine Men!†reflects that tone asking in its subtitle “Which is the rooster Which is the henâ€â€”a joking reference to perceived reversals of traditional gender roles. Although written as a satirical commentary on contemporary manners rather than as an explicit statement about sexuality the song later acquired an association with LGBTQ audiences and performers. In later decades it was revived and performed in drag and cabaret contexts where its playful questioning of gender presentation resonated with queer performance traditions. 1951245Near fine: a couple of very minor scratches on spine a little fraying at head of spine slipcase shows a little shelf wear. Interior of volume and front and back boards are pristine.

This volume was a personal gift from Rainier III Prince of Monaco 1923 - 2005 to the eminent medievalist Kenneth M. Setton 1914 – 1995 on the occasion of a visit by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace to her hometown of Philadelphia in the 1960's. Professor Setton was at the time Director of Libraries at the University of Pennsylvania. Bound into the volume is the prince's card with a note in his handwriting to professor Setton.
This is a deluxe binding on heavy hand-laid paper with deckled edges and gilt page tops. It is one of a limited number of copies; this copy however is not numbered apparently because it came from the royal family. It appears to be similar to the 400 Papeteries du Marais exemplars as the pages do not bear the watermarked arms of the Grimaldi family. This edition was published on 11 April 1951 the inauguration date of François Cogné's bronze statue of Prince Albert as a sailor in Monaco's Jardin St. Martin. Preface by Prof. Paul Portier 1866 - 1962 a physician and physiologist who was also the Director of the Institut Océanographique in Monaco and Paris. He accompanied Prince Albert on many of his voyages.

Albert I Albert Honoré Charles Grimaldi 1848 – 1922 was Prince of Monaco from 1889 to 1922. He was a political reformer naval officer archeologist paleontologist oceanographer and member of the British Academy of Science. He sponsored a number of arctic expeditions and was well-known for his scientific achievements.

These autobiographical reminiscences are quite readable; the prince writes very well and his prose frequently approaches poetry.
L'Imprimerie Nationale de Monaco hardcover
