viii, 272 pages. Bibliography. Index. Footnotes. "Pursues the story of the militia issue and its intellectual significance from its introduction into political debate before the Union by Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun. Demonstrates the extent to which the themes of Scottish political debate were absorbed and generalised in the thought of the Enlightenment. Argues that the philosophy of the Enlightenment was not only a reflection of Scottish social experience but also yielded critical and enduring lessons for Scottish political life." - dust jacket. 3 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with numerous plates, neat contemporary inscription on front free endpaper of second volume; cloth, gilt backs, all very good, clean copies in the dustwrapper. The trilogy comprises 'The Ballad and the Plough. A Portrait of the Life of the Old Scottish Farmtouns' (1978), 'Willie Gavin, Crofter Man. Portrait of a Vanished Lifestyle' (1980) and 'The Cornkister Days. Portrait of a Land and its Rituals' (1984). David Kerr Cameron's masterly study of the old Scottish rural way of life is carefully structured. In the first volume he tells of the larger farms or 'farmtouns'; in the second he examines the more numerous smallholdings or crofts. In his final volume he broadens the focus to include the life of the fields, the seasons and rituals, and the culture of the agrarian background in general. In its scope, its detail and its rigorous objectivity the trilogy is unique. A handsome set of an important contribution to the agricultural history of Scotland.
