Twenty leaves on heavy stiff paper stock. With 18 illustrations by Wycliffe Taylor printed in sepia, accompanying an appropriate verse. Oblong folio. 370 x 280 mm. Original pictorial paper covered boards binding, lettered and decorated in red. Binding worn at the edges, but overall very good. Harry Cumberland Bentley (1861-1913) was an English sporting author and poet. He was famed as the 'Bard of the Pytchley Hunt.' In this book there is a 1930 manuscript presentation from 'Mouse Bentley'. This is probably the author's daughter - Violet Esmé Hawkesworth (Field) (Hassall) (Bury) (Bentley) [1898-1986]. Fanciful imagination has pictured a trout swimming up the River Ayr, passing into the Lugar Water at Barskimming, entering the Black Loch via the Glaisnock Water and thence into the Black Loch. The second outflow from the loch would carry the trout into Creoch Loch, then into the Loch o' th' Lowes, the River Nith and finally into the Solway Firth after a journey of around seventy miles. Three volumes. 8vo. Uncut. Foxed. Bound in the original boards, which have become quite worn and broken. This true First Edition would make a good candidate for classy rebinding. "Kenilworth was born out of Constable's suggestion to write a novel set during the time of Queen Elizabeth; however, Scott rejected the suggestion that it be entitled "The Armada" because he had other ideas than centring the novel on the epic events of the invasion. He based the novel around the legend of the murder of Amy Robsart, a story told in Meikle's old ballad, which had been one of Scott's favourite poems. However, Scott did accept Constable's suggestion of naming the novel Kenilworth instead of "Cumnor Hall". The publisher applauded this decision with the exclamation: "By God, I am all but the author of the Waverley Novels!" When Kenilworth appeared in 1821 it was an immediate success with both readers and critics. The Edinburgh Review praised Scott for bringing to life the character of Queen Elizabeth, and for the way in which he contrasted the evil plotting of Varney against the grandeur of Kenilworth Castle." Originally delivered as an address by the retiring President of Inverness Scientific and Literary Society. Very scarce, especially in this condition.

Very light foxing on fore-edge, fine otherwise. - First volume of the series of six, complete in itself. The other five volumes consist of maps and plans and numerical results of dredgings and soundings. The present volume is the most important one, it consists of 12 papers on several physical and biological aspects of the lakes (surface oscillations, temperatures, chemistry, botany, sediments, plankton, etc.) and some general limnological issues, and a very large bibliography of limnological literature of about 2,700 references covering pages 659 through 752. This volume is considered as a classic contribution to the study of limnology, a reprint edition appeared in 1977 (New York: Arno Press).

The Commissioners included John Marquis of Tweedale, William Earl of Annandale, John Lord Murray, Sir James Stewart, Adam Cockburn, Sir Archibald Hope, Sir William Hamilton, Sir James Ogilvie and Adam Drummond. The letter repeats complimentary made by Queen Victoria in respect of the work. A printed slip transcribing the letter is bound in at end. Two Volumes. Illustrated with full page engravings in very good state, and a folding map (soiled and slightly chipped). The lovely engravings are mostly by R. Scott after drawings by J. Stevenson. On title page of Volume One there is an inked inscription "Edward James Foote, to his beloved Wife Mary Foote. On title page of Volume Two inked inscription "Edward James Foote to his beloved Wife Mary Foote: and since her lamented death to our Daughters Mary, Elizabeth, Eleanor & Anna". 235mm. Original full leather bindings, very worn. Boards very fragile or detached. The early owner of this set - Vice-Admiral Sir Edward James Foote (1767-1833) was a prominent Royal Navy officer during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He served on a number of ships and at several actions, but is best known for becoming caught up in the aftermath of the collapse of the Parthenopean Republic at Naples in 1799. The Gentle Shephered was first published in 1725. The author, Allan Ramsay (1686-1758) was a Scottish poet (or makar), playwright, publisher, librarian and wig-maker! VERIA BX 2
