In February and March he wrote three letters to the editor of the Edinburgh Weekly Journal in which he used the currency issue as an exemplum for the larger tendency. The letters caused a sensation. Ministerial friends were very angry but withdrew the measure. 183424462Glasgow 1834. Very good overall. An illustrated advertising sheet with 3 columns of Glasgow shipping advertisements which serves as writing paper for a half penny hand written letter. The letter is from Gilkison & Brown to Messrs. Davidson & Syme lawyers and comments that there are no vessels from Clyde to New York at present "nor will there be any for some weeks". It quotes the cabin and steerage passage rates also. <br /> <br /> Gilkison & Brown were maritime agents for the Canada Company in Glasgow; they acted as ship and insurance brokers and commission agents. Emigration from Scotland to Canada and other destinations was in response to tenant congestion and starvation as well as land owner bankruptcy. In the 1830s 20000 highlanders emigrated to Canada.<br /> <br /> The maritime advertising printed in 3 columns is for: the Royal Exchange Assurance of London; individual ads for 10 ships all out of Glasgow and bound for ports all over the world including New York; Calcutta; Trinidad; the Cape of Good Hope; Trieste Italy Genoa Kingston Jamaica and Honduras; and St. Thomas. Each ad is accompanied with an engraved sailing ship.<br /> <br /> The letter is addressed to Messrs. Davidson & Syme Charlotte Street Edinburgh and franked also with a stamped 24 Oct 1834. "COCLK PM" is stamped in 2 sections due to the letter fold. <br /> <br /> 15 3/4 x 9 3/4"; folds to 7 7/8 x 9 3/4". Wax seal caused small hole affecting some words in manuscript text.<br /> <br /> A lovely example of a used letter sheet. unknown

First edition of this very scarce Victorian collection of Scottish songs & music in dialect including many published here for the first time as well as musical scores published for the first time. A rare daily diary from April 14th 1873 to January 27th 1874 detailing the weather storms the growing of crops cattle shipments plantings the comings & goings of the islanders of ships some large mostly smaller Reaper class to & from Inverness Edinburgh Wales and beyond including the author's trip to Edinburgh concerning the author's acceptance as clerk treasurer and officer of the board of the church. The journal ends with his note that he "must down to Kara Are of Kara and brake the sad news to his sister about a death.and followed by "moderate wind with a slight drizzling rain." A wealth of information on a remote area of the Orkney Islands. unknown

Vertical red rules for accounting printed on each page. 1-3/8" strip of leather neatly removed from the fore-edge of the front cover; occasional ink spotting and minor stains throughout; toned leaves with a few creases; faded pencil calculations to pastedowns. <br /> <br /> Interesting mid-19th century farm ledger apparently from eastern Scotland possibly Inverurie or Aberdeen recorded during the great famines in Ireland and the Scottish Highlands. The currency symbols at the top of the expense and income columns appear to be in pounds shilling and pence and various place and personal names which appear repeatedly in the text – i.e. Commercial Co. of Port Elfinston sic Aberdeen Wm. Duncan et al – lead to our deducing this locale. Although the ledger is anonymous the names of Robert Frasier Brach and James Dugard appear possibly as business clients as do the names of the recorder's many temporary workers. These workers usually hired around the planting and harvesting season are both male and female and include Mary Ellice Jas Marr George Dugard Wm. Duncan Alex Burr and many others. <br /> <br /> Extensively detailed and highly readable this ledger document the many expenses and income sources of a working farm showing precise amounts for equipment scythes and carts feature prominently horses bolls of meal barrels of lime whisky and various other sundries. The farm's produce relied heavily on grains especially corn and barley just as the Corn Laws were being heatedly debated in Parliament and its overall diversity demonstrates the crop diversity that allowed eastern Scotland and the Lowlands to evade the ravages of the potato blight; plots and crops for planting the "slack land" are also demarcated. Charts showing daily employee wages are also of special note. <br /> <br /> Overall a unique useful and well-maintained agricultural document concurrent with and standing in stark contrast to the devastation occurring in the western portion of the country and Ireland at that time. unknown

The Royal Highlanders formed in Scotland and fought in several wars including the American Revolution. The Royal Highlanders were also a fraternal organization founded in Nebraska in 1895. Association Copy with the Signature of the Bishop of Brechin 1869 on the front free endpaper. Alexander Penrose Forbes 1817-1875 was a Scottish Episcopalian divine. A leading cleric in the Scottish Episcopal Church he was the Bishop of Brechin from 1847 until his death in Dundee in 1875. In 1847 Forbes moved the Episcopal residence to Dundee where through his efforts several churches were built among them the pro-cathedral of St. Paul's. He was later prosecuted in the Church courts for heresy over his publication in 1857 sharing his views on the Eucharist and was censured for erroneous teaching. There is also a Small book label for A.B.W. MacEwen of Maine a Scottish medieval genealogist. He also researched the genealogy of the families of Prince Edward Island for which he received an Award. He published widely in American and British journals of history and genealogy considered the greatest scholar of medieval Scottish genealogy and was bestowed with an honorary membership in The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy. lv 1 176pp bound in brown cloth with the leather spine label intact no chips binding and hinges tight. Im guessing Kinnell is The town in Scotland and home of the Author. Alexander Berry was a wealthy merchant Member of the Legislative Council and landowner Born in Fife Scotland in 1781 died 1873. Also inscribed at the end of the preface in the same hand " Kinnell = Manse 12 April 1860 George Walker" The preface also contains a few correction made by the author in 1860.
