11107With manuscript inscription dated 1871. 4to 2 pp. On first leaf of a bifolium. Text clear and complete. Good on lightly-aged laid paper with watermark of 'A ANNANDALE & SONS'. Stuck down on the reverse of the blank second leaf of the bifolium is a square of paper from the leaf to which it was attached in an album and beneath this square visible when held up to the light is the inscription: 'Imperfectly printed Annie Stirling Stuart Castlemilk 1871'. The poem is 48 lines long arranged in twelve stanzas. Signed 'H. M. E.' in type at end perhaps one of the Erskines relations by marriage of the Stirling-Stuart family. A lament for 'happy youth! too quickly sped Within these old grey towers'. First stanza reads: 'THE autumn winds are moaning Around the old square tower Where once three hundred years ago Was Scottish Mary's Bower.' The reference is to Cassilton Tower around which Castlemilk House was built where Mary Queen of Scots stayed on the eve of the Battle of Langside 1568. References to the 'Tay bridge' and 'great city' i.e. Glasgow. Last stanza: 'The memory of our early home Its fairest lustre shed O'er lives that blossom in good deeds That live when we are dead!' Excessively scarce: no copy in the National Library of Scotland on COPAC or WorldCat. Castlemilk House was built around Cassilton Tower which was started in 1460 on the site of a 13th-century castle. The five-hundred-year-old Castlemilk House was demolished by Glasgow Corporation in 1969 to make way for an ill-advised housing project. Castlemilk is now a district of Glasgow. With manuscript inscription dated 1871. unknown

Issues 21 1714 and 33 1726 each lacking final leaf of index. Contemporary panelled vol. 1 or marbled vol. 2 calf spines divided by raised bands between double gilt rules red and green morocco labels. Some scattered toning and soiling a number of gatherings in vol. 1 sprung but all present 2 leaves torn without loss. A little rubbed and scratched pastedowns in vol 1 lifted. A near-continuous run of the printed issues of the acts passed by the General Assembly the governing body of the Church of Scotland which has met annually to deliberate and legislate throughout the Church’s history. The run included here dates from 1690 when the Presbyterian governance of the church was enacted in Scots law to formalise the exclusion of the episcopal structure that had been controversially reintroduced after the Restoration to 1726 a few years before the First Succession of 1733 - a turbulent period in which the interaction between Church law and civil law was a live issue. The bindings of varying leather styles but with matching labels are probably the publisher’s - contemporary ads indicate that groups of issues were sold bound. 17912110Edinburgh: Printed in the year 1791. 4to pp. 38. Stitched as issued with original marbled paper covers with no backstrip. Some creasing to corners and edges a few short tears to edges of wrappers. A scarce privately printed pamphlet providing arguments from history and use that the Prince of Wales later George IV held the titles of Duke of Rothesay Earl of Carrick etc. in the Peerage of Scotland. It evidently answers a charge that these had lapsed - perhaps stemming from the regency crisis of 1789 combined with the preference for Prince of Wales as the heir apparent’s title following the Union or else perhaps the dispute goes all the way back to the absence of a holder of the titles between 1751 the death of Frederick Louis and 1762 the birth of the future George IV. ESTC locates copies in the BL House of Lords and NLS x3 only in the UK plus just the Huntington elsewhere. ESTC T83694. Printed in the year unknown

Second edition of the first two Letters First edition of the Third Letter. 60; 86 2 blank; 39 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. "In this series of 'Letters' defending the issuance of Scottish banknotes Scott benefits from his work on Swift by patterning the Malachi Malagrowther letters on Swift's Drapier's Letters" Todd & Bowden p. 621.

"In February 1826 there may have been a degree of calculation in Scott's entering the debate on a government measure introduced to deal with the economic crisis which would have restricted the rights of the Scottish banks to issue their own notes but Scott represented it as a nationalist issue 'the late disposition to change every thing in Scotland to an English model' Journal 94. In February and March he wrote three letters to the editor of the Edinburgh Weekly Journal in which he used the currency issue as an exemplum for the larger tendency. The letters caused a sensation. Ministerial friends were very angry but withdrew the measure. The banks were grateful; taking a lead from his old rival in love William Forbes they agreed to the creation of a trust for the settling of Scott's debts and The Letters of Malachi Malagrowther as the letters are now known is recognized as a classic in political argument" DNB.

A complete set uncommon.
