William Aiton (1760-1847) of Strathaven was Sheriff Substitute for the Middle Ward in Lanarkshire, and was widely known as an authority "on all matters bearing on Scottish husbandry". First edition, [4], 288, 149, [1]pp., folding engraved map, Birmingham Law Society stamp on title, recent half calf, marbled boards, spine gilt, red morocco title label. The Appin Murder occurred on 14 May 1752 near Appin in the west of Scotland, and it resulted in what is often held to be a notorious miscarriage of justice. It occurred in the tumultuous aftermath of the Jacobite Rising of 1745. The murder inspired events in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Kidnapped.
