The early owner of this set - Vice-Admiral Sir Edward James Foote (1767-1833) was a prominent Royal Navy officer during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He served on a number of ships and at several actions, but is best known for becoming caught up in the aftermath of the collapse of the Parthenopean Republic at Naples in 1799. The Gentle Shephered was first published in 1725. The author, Allan Ramsay (1686-1758) was a Scottish poet (or makar), playwright, publisher, librarian and wig-maker! VERIA BX 2
