As its name implies, the Wealth Tax (Varlik Vergisi), was originally conceived as a tool for taxing the extreme wealth being made through wartime profiteering and black market operations in Turkey during the Second World War. In practice, however, it was imposed in an arbitrary and discriminatory fashion, in essence representing a sort of "economic warfare" carried out by the Turkish regime against the country's non-Muslim population, appropriating much of their wealth and shattering all the hopes and aspirations for eventual religious and ethnic equality that had been held out by the Turkish Constitution some twenty years before. This study is based on documents gleaned from the National Archives of the United Kingdom and provides a detailed and chronological account of this tragic event.".

Très bel exemplaire.Ouvrage destiné à des passionnés d'histoire et déjà avertis. Selon l'auteur, les découvertes archéologiques du XXe siècle nous révèlent l'existence d'une civilisation sumérienne inspirée d'une science préhistorique antérieure, qui fut l'un des sommets de l'intelligence humaine. Dans cette nouvelle optique, Robert Dézélus affirme que l'Arménie est "un monument imposant de l'histoire humaine". Après une première partie consacrée aux origines et au passé profond de l'Arménie, l'auteur traite l'histoire de l'Arménie puis revient à la mystique sumérienne avant d'évoquer la littérature arménienne et la naissance de l'alphabet. Puis il évoque, dans l'ordre : la musique, l'Eglise, l'émigration, l'art, l'architecture. La bibliographie est aussi impressionnante que la diversité des sujets traités dans l'ouvrage. Des cartes manuscrites et divers croquis viennent illustrer cet ouvrage assez singulier.
