First edition of this excellent Victorian travelogue of climbing and hiking through the Swiss Alps which also made a significant contribution to modern geology. Lubbock’s work in this treatise and others were noted for understanding the archaeological and geological record in understanding former valley-floor levels and the river terraces in response to geological changes. He was an early proponent in glacial climatic fluctuation which was not widely accepted at the end of the 19th century. Pen notations applied to many images 2 albums with "Rubattel & Weyermann S.A." in gilt on upper cover but all four are from the same source photographs generally very good to excellent a few rubbed. Albums of the period one will be improved some & internally in very good condition. An extensive photographic record of all the finely detailed Rubattel & Weyermann watch casings made over the period. Each is numbered consecutively and additional annotations are frequently present. All in all an extraordinary record of what was produced from this Swiss watch case maker. Rubattel & Weyermann are the same company that in 2002 became integrated to the Swatch Group. Du Pan a Swiss aristocrat and staunch anti-revolutionary opposed any treaty with the French whom he blamed for debasing all of European culture. The first edition of this tract was originally published in 1724 with few known copies. The author settled 600 of his countrymen in Purrysburg South Carolina. Interior contents mostly clean. Plates of photos of buildings plays historical & contemporary personages. . Book's format unusual. It opens directly up 18 pages of text but with no title author publisher. It dives straight into the text. This is followed by a folder with places for 4 pamphlets and a very long fold out of Swiss historical figures The f/o is 16.5x600cm quite long. It is separated at the 2nd fold line. There are no other fold line tears. This fold out's colorful cover is titled "Grundungsfeier der Stadt Bern" and is shown at the bottom on our pic #3. Pic #5 shows it unfolded. At portfolio's end is a section of 28 loose plates. These 28 are all reproduced photos. Pic #4 of two of the pamphlets one contains reproductions of photos. The other unfortunately is empty. More unfortunately the gothic font is difficult for me to read. Hence I've made no attempt to decipher. . hardcover
