A characteristic gathering of the three texts the Bible being the Geneva-Tonson-Junius version in an edition that is a very close reprint of Barker's 1607 edition. The general engraved title is undated and the sectional full title-page for the NT is dated 1611 but the printer's colophon at the end is dated 1612. The text of the Apocrypha is included as a part of the contiguous whole. The edition of the Genealogies which is here bound prior to the Bible is one of the several folio printings attributed to Beale that are partially sorted as to minute variants in STC and ESTC; however this example does not conform to the variants in ESTC in regard to the line-breaks in the side note on A1V. The present edition of the Sternhold and Hopkins Psalms includes some music settings. This is among the last folio London printings of the Geneva text the standard text of 16th century Protestantism and the text referenced by Shakespeare Donne Bunyan et al. The first edition of the NT was printed in Geneva in 1557 and was first printed in England in 1575-6. ESTC S1189; S101955; and S122901. Herbert 312. 19481472Pass Christian Mississippi and St. Louis Missouri 1948. Very good. 10½" x 13½". 16 loose photo album leaves with 241 black and white photographs and three items of ephemera; around one quarter are inserted into corner mounts the rest are adhesive mounted. Most photos measure from 2½" x 1¾" to 4½" x 2 ¾" and approximately one third are captioned. Leaves very good with chipped edges that are prone to more of it photos generally very good or better. This album depicts Geneva Morgan as she progressed from sixth grade to graduation from nursing school. She grew up in Pass Christian Mississippi and attended St. Mary's Infirmary's nursing school in St. Louis Missouri. According to her obituary she worked as a night nurse in Richmond Heights Missouri until her retirement in 1982. The album begins with three photos of the grounds and students at St. Philomena's School in Pass Christian which Geneva attended before high school. Next are a number of photos of Geneva and her classmates who graduated from Randolph High School in 1944. Randolph was built in the late 1920s after receiving a grant from the Rosenwald School Building program. These images include many full length portraits of students including several young men who are in military uniforms. Other photos show Geneva and her friends and family around her home and three interesting shots feature African Americans marching in a parade which may be part of a school graduation processional. Around 70 photos depict Geneva and fellow African American nursing students. These include group shots photos of the St. Mary's Infirmary grounds as well as several that appear to be part of a graduation ceremony inside a chapel. Although the photos related to Geneva at nursing school do not have captions we know she attended the school at the St. Mary's Infirmary in St. Louis based on a piece of ephemera pasted among the nursing photos with "SMI" as well as a couple of photos of nurses taken outside which shows signage for "S.M. Arnold Inc." which was located across the street from SMI at the time. In 1933 the hospital was only the second in St. Louis to accept black patients and it was the first in the city with an integrated nursing staff. It was also the first Catholic nursing school in the United States to accept African Americans. Excellent photos capturing life in a segregated Mississippi and documenting a group of African American nurses in the Midwest. unknown books

Contemporary advertisements throughout. Includes 8 pages of contemporary handwritten recipes and a calling card inserted loosely at the front; notation in pencil to verso of rear endpaper else unmarked. An excellent and research rich copy of this rare charitable cookery book which is currently the only one known on the market. OCLC reports only 5 examples at institutions worldwide.

First and only edition of this charitable women's cookery which was produced "for the instruction of women in Culinary Science" with the goal "not only to increase the fund already in the Treasury which ultimately is to be appropriated for the equipment of that institution but also to contribute a book which shall be of practical use to all house-keepers." Clearly a group of educated women the Board compiling the cook book viewed house-keeping as an occupation that required knowledge and scientific workability. They reveal in the preface that all advice and recipes were researched and vetted to ensure that they created "a work of real merit" and their title page contains an epigram from Ruskin praising women's roles as sorcerers chemists and "loaf-givers." Including a range of recipes from breads and cheeses to chafing dish meals to meats sauces and salads the book also contains advice on different service for lunch and dinner. The recipes' clear and easy to follow instructions suggest its compilers recognized the busy lives of women running homes and that they opted to assist in making domestic cookery straightforward and efficient. Notably the Geneva Hospital which the Woman's Board supported was connected to Geneva Medical College which only 45 years prior had made history by granting an M.D. to Elizabeth Blackwell the first degreed female doctor in the U.S. This connection signals that the women of the organization also hoped to ensure updated equipment and a solid infrastructure for an institution that had welcomed in students of their own sex.

Charitable Cook Books Collection of Helen Evans Brown 197. The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English preceding the King James Version by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of 16th-century English Protestantism and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare and Oliver Cromwell. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower. This version of the Bible is significant because for the very first time a mechanically printed mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public which came with a variety of scriptural study guides and aids collectively called an apparatus which included verse citations that allow the reader to cross-reference one verse with numerous relevant verses in the rest of the Bible introductions to each book of the Bible that acted to summarize all of the material that each book would cover maps tables woodcut illustrations and indices. The annotations which are an important part of the Geneva Bible were Calvinist and Puritan in character and as such they were disliked by the ruling pro-government Anglicans of the Church of England as well as King James I who commissioned the "Authorized Version" or King James Bible in order to replace it. Surprisingly the Geneva notes were included in a few editions of the King James version even as late as 1715. unknown books
