Light toning to text slightly heavier in places light foxing to a few leaves. $500. Only edition. Includes details on the recently completed 1736 survey indicated by the exact location of some 74 boundary stones on the Gloucestershire side and of 29 on the Somersetshire side. One example: "Stone 1. On the bank of the River of Avon near a limekiln on the East and a sluice on the West call'd Woodwell's-Lake standeth the first stone." This is indeed the only edition; a copy at the Ransom Center at the University of Texas Austin with a suggested date of "1735" must surely be a mistake. Large initial capital letter 'W'. 30.3 cm x 22 cm. <br/><br/>Charles best known today as the instigator/leader of the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1745 in his effort to restore an absolute monarchy to the United Kingdom which culminated in defeat at the Battle of Culloden essentially signaling the end of the Jacobite cause. This broadside issued at the apex of the rebellion highlights the extent of Charles' belief in his claim to the throne for in it he declares the parliament at London to lack legitimacy; next he brands traitor & rebel all who attend said parliament; and finally he declares the "pretended union of these Kingdoms now at an End." A very rare survivor of this tumultous time of British history this broadside is known in only 6 copies per ESTC none on this side of the pond. unknown books

So controversial was it that Parliament commissioned an answer with John Milton's Eikonoklastes. Milton was the first to cast doubt on its authorship and Madan's New Bibliography of the Eikon Basilike demonstrated that while Dr. John Gauden was the author he worked closely from Charles' manuscripts. hardcover books

Early 20th-century half calf marbled boards all edges gilt by Zaehnsdorf. Light wear to extremities; a few occasional pale stains lacks terminal blank generally fresh. FIRST EDITION third state with correct pagination in quire G. Originally attributed to Charles I the bibliographer Falconer Madan believes it was written by John Gauden who probably included some authentic writings of the king. Though the title-page reads 1648 it was published on 9 February 1649 ten days after the king was beheaded in the aftermath of the English Civil War. The famous allegorical frontispiece by William Marshall depicts Charles I as a Christian martyr. The work was so successful in its portrayal of the king that at the Restoration a special commemoration of the king on 30 January was added to the Book of Common Prayer. Woodcut royal arms at head large decorative initial capital. 1 vols. 14-1/2 x 11-1/4 inches. Backed with tissue some old dampstaining some loss at margins but printed area complete except for a very small area of the royal arms. Old folds rust marks along with marginal wear suggest that this may at one time have been "affixt to some conspicuous place" as the text instructs. Printed broadside. Woodcut royal arms at head large decorative initial capital. 1 vols. 14-1/2 x 11-1/4 inches. King's Evil and the Royal Touch. From the Middle Ages in England and France it was believed that scrofula or "the King's Evil" could be cured by the touch of royalty; ceremonies were held in which the King would touch and "heal" hundreds of afflicted subjects. <br/>By the late 1400s it was believed that one could also be cured by touching a type of coin called an angel which had been touched by the monarch. After angels ceased to be minted in the 1620s the same effect was said to be achieved by touching a gold medallion embossed much like the old coin.<br/>Some monarchs touched many people. King Henry IV of France touched up to 1500 at one time. The last English monarch to carry out this practice was Queen Anne who died in 1714 but it continued in France. Louis XV touched more than 2000 scrofula sufferers and the last French monarch to do this was Charles X in 1825 Science Museum London. Cf. It also is signed in type by Lord Chief Justice George Jeffryes sic "The Hanging Judge" amongst others.<br/>An interesting manuscript note in a contemporary hand at the lower margin with significant loss calls the attention of "All Parsons Vicars and Curates" to the regulations set forth in the broadside. An important document in the history of the English Reformation this was the first collection of ecclesiastical law compiled by the Church of England that was not derived from Roman Catholic sources. It was originally enacted in 1571 and amended in 1603 and 1640. This latter issue contains the notorious Article VI "Impugners of the Rites and Ceremonies Established in the Church Censured" which incensed the Puritans. One of the six printings of the English text dated 1604 distinguished by STC and ESTC. The copy in hand has the catchword 'Reuerence' on D1r and STC suggests it may have been printed in 1608. Very good. 12mo pp. 6 ix 1 156; the first leaf consisting of an approbation on the recto and an engraved frontispiece on the verso; contemporary and probably original black goatskin with decorative gilt border and similar border outlining central panels on the covers smooth gilt spine with winged cherub heads a.e.g. green ribbon page maker; minor refurbishment at head and tail of spine. ¶ An attractive English binding possibly made in Brighton on account of the early provenance of two women owners see below. This edition is not listed ESTC or OCLC and is distinguished by the engraved frontispiece on the verso the printed appeal by W. Bent dated 1785 warning the public of "surreptitious" counterfeit editions of the present work. Indeed two similar but not identical editions are listed by ESTC; these are recorded in just one or two libraries each. Both editions are reproduced in "Eighteenth Century Collections Online" and ours represents an entirely different setting of type. THE BINDING: The most extraordinary tools on the present binding are surely the "bat-wing" cherubs that adorn the entire length of the spine quite distinctive and yet apparently remain unrecorded. It is very possible that the workshop was provincial perhaps Brighton which accounts for a paltry amount of literature published on the subject. PROVENANCE: Early inscriptions of two women collectors appear on the verso of the first flyleaf: "Sarah Lumsdale 9 Bloomsbury Place Brighton" NB: this house still exists -- "Mary Cobb April 11 1800."
