164024189<p><strong>1640 Thomas Cranmer 1ed 39 Articles Henry VIII English Reformation Legum RARE</strong></p><p>An extremely important first edition of '<em>Reformatio Legum Ecclesiasticarum'</em> a work on ecclesiastical law when Henry VIII initiated the English Reformation and separation of the Church of England from the Catholic Church and papal rule. Thomas Cranmer was closely tied to the king both politically and as a friend and was an important figure in the development of this work. This work established laws and regulations for the church including prayer music testimony excommunication judicial cases and political ties to the church. Other topics covered in this work involved domestic disputes such as divorce as well as more controversial topics including calling nonconformity to the church 'superstitions and idolatrous'. Hawkins II 537.</p><p>This 1640 reworking of the '<em>Thirty Nine Articles'</em> was translated out of the original English and into Latin by John Cheke and in 1553 was reportedly published in the name of King Henry VIII. This translation was the beginning of what would lead to Thomas Cranmer's being burned alive. Much of the contents of this compilation was used by John Foxe in his portrayal of Cranmer in his '<em>Book of Martyrs'</em>.</p><p>According to the British Museum Catalogue this work is</p><p>"A code of ecclesiastical law intended for use in the Church of England but never ratified by Parliament. Drawn up in 1552 by Commissioners headed by Thomas Cranmer. An uncommon printing of the revised text of the Delaune's translation of the English Liturgy first published in 1616 and John Durel's translation of the 39 Articles. Durel 1625-1683 an Anglican clergyman and apologist enjoyed a distinguished career and royal favor securing a printing monopoly on this French prayer book and eventually becoming a royal chaplain in 1662. "A revised text completed before 1665 retained much of Delaune's original but incorporated changes embodied in the Act of Uniformity and Durel's translation of the Thirty-Nine Articles; it was published eight times between 1666 and 1695" - DNB. The Psalms included here have a separate titlepage dated 1686 and register though their inclusion is noted on the initial title-page. The translation into French verse is that undertaken by Clement Marot and Theodore de Beze early in the previous century. Replacement grey and white marbled endpapers likely contemporary with binding. Endpapers reinforced with black cloth at gutters. Owner's bookplate printed in red & black to inside front board. Early or original blank front and rear endpapers front blank endpaper with owner's signature dated 1817. With additional engraved title page signed 'P. Williamson Scu.' dated MDCLXXXI. 'The Psalter or Psalms of David after the translation of the Great Bible .' has separate dated title page; register is continuous. Divisional title page on sig. 2O4r: 'The form and manner of making ordaining and consecrating of bishops priests and deacons according to the order of the Church of England' and on sig. 2S1r: 'A form of prayer with thanksgiving to be used yearly upon the fifth day of November'. Decorative initials head- and tail-pieces throughout. Text largely printed in black letter. Very minor dampstaining to top of pages at gutter from c. sig. 2D1 onwards and at base near gutter in metrical psalms from sig. L1r. Repaired tear to leaf C4 and small 3cm closed tear to leaf T5 both slightly affecting text. Leaves F2 & F3 repaired at edges with laid paper slightly affecting text on F3v. This was one of the last BCPs to be printed in the reign of Charles II and many references to the royal family throughout have been altered and annotated in an old hand on multiple occasions to reflect the accessions of William and Mary Anne and George I. Bound with 1680 edition of the metrical psalms: 'The Whole Book of Psalms. Collected into English Meeter by Thomas Sternhold John Hopkins and others' with imprint 'Printed by J. M. for the Company of Stationers MDCLXXX'. As per ESTC this 'J. M.' was J. Macock. Repaired tear to metrical psalms leaf M1. minor impact on text. The first prayer book published in the wake of the English Reformation appeared in 1549 during the reign of Edward VI. That work was revised in 1604 during the reign of James I and again in 1662 during the reign of Charles II. While revision and supplementation has continued into the present era the 1662 edition of which the present copy is essentially an early reprint remains authoritative as the official prayer book of the Church of England.<br /> <br /> Despite the discrepancy in dates which appear on the title pages of the present edition the Book of Common Prayer and the Psalms of David comprise a single publication as noted at the collective title and confirmed by the signatures. This work was privately printed for Nicolas Chevalier who was a hobbyist and coin collector. A large proportion of Dutch print-making at the end of the 17th century focused on William III. An almost categorical personality cult surrounded the stadtholder-king. Among the print-makers Romeyn de Hooghe 1645-1708 was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque engraver and caricaturist. He is best known for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. De Hooghes 12 etchings of triumphal arches for this work are adaptations of plates in the works by Bidloo and Tronchin de Breuil published in 1691 and 1692. Adriaen Schoonebeek c. 1657- 1705 is often mentioned because of his appearance as witness for the prosecution in a court case against de Hooghe that formed the climax of a slanderous exchange of pamphets between Orangists and members of the Amsterdam faction in 1690. These animosities did not prevent re- employment of both engravers in executing plates for this Nicolas Chevaliers 1692 illustrated volume on numismatics and the life of King William. Rare. Marshall sculpsit representing Charles with the crown of thorns in his right hand. Authorship of the Eikon basilike was originally attributed to Charles I but according to Madan pp. 125-33 it was written by John Gauden who probably included some authentic writings of the king. The imprint is false. Cf. Madan. In this issue the ""Eikon basilike"" lacks the ""Explanation of the embleme"" and the portrait of Charles II as Prince of Wales; this issue also appeared separately. Early 20th-century half calf marbled boards all edges gilt by Zaehnsdorf. Light wear to extremities; a few occasional pale stains lacks terminal blank generally fresh. FIRST EDITION third state with correct pagination in quire G. Originally attributed to Charles I the bibliographer Falconer Madan believes it was written by John Gauden who probably included some authentic writings of the king. Though the title-page reads 1648 it was published on 9 February 1649 ten days after the king was beheaded in the aftermath of the English Civil War. The famous allegorical frontispiece by William Marshall depicts Charles I as a Christian martyr. The work was so successful in its portrayal of the king that at the Restoration a special commemoration of the king on 30 January was added to the Book of Common Prayer.
