"This report of the proceeding and debated in the Convention was made for the Boston Daily Advertiser by the editor of that paper who was a member of the Convention assisted by a gentleman of the bar to whom a seat was assigned by the President. The principal design was to furnish the public from day to day with an account of the proceedings through that paper; and to this design the report was necessarily made to conform. For a great part of the session the proceedings of each day were published in the morning paper of the following day; the reporters were in consequence obligated to prepare their reports in the greatest haste and incases in which the sittings continued to a great length of time and especially when two sittings were held on the same day and protracted to a late hour in the evening it has become necessary as well on account of he short interval for transcribing as from regard to the capacity of the paper to abridge the debate to a greater degree than they would otherwise have done. Many of the reported speeches are to be considered rather as abridgments than as full reports those of which were delivered. It was in general the object of the reporters to give the whole argument in substance without being scrupulously careful to adhere to the language of the several speakers. In this design however they may occasionally have failed; sometimes from not hearing distinctly- sometimes perhaps from not fully understanding the scope of the argument and sometimes from not being able through fatigue to give proper attention. For these reasons it will not be supposed that complete justice is done to the different speakers in point of elegance and propriety of expression of that the same degree of justice is done to each in regard to fullness and accuracy; but the reporters have endeavoured according to the best of their ability to give as full and accurate a report of the debates as circumstances would admit." This paragraph was the newspapers "Advertisement" or a disclaimer for any mis-reporting. This book is complete with the original boards that are heavily worn along the edges and the book would need to be rebound. The text has some foxing but in very good condition. Hard Cover. The 85pp. supplement contains treaties of the United States in their first Congressional printings. The treaty with France had attempted to reconcile the many commercial problems the United States had with the French republic; promulgated in 1800 it was ratified by John Adams in one of his last acts as President. The British convention of 1802 was an attempt to settle the commercial differences arising from interpretations of Jay's Treaty although this measure did not solve the problems which drove Jefferson to the Embargo a few years later. John Reeves had been appointed king's printer in 1800 and edited his own version of the BCP of which this is the second edition; the separate title-page following the preliminary matter is dated 1801. That preliminary matter offering historical and liturgical commentary is extensive and interesting.<br>Â Â Â Â Fore-edge: This beautiful example bears a subtly shaded => fore-edge painting showing Westminster Abbey in the background behind a waterfront view with sailboats.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Full straight-grain dark olive green morocco covers framed in elegant feather and pearl twist gilt roll turn-ins with floral gilt roll. Text includes "Proper Lessons to be read at Morning and Evening Prayer" "The Calendar" with the table of lessons "A Table of the Feasts that are to be observed in the Church of England throughout the Year" prayers and readings for the course of the year. Text very small print and is unpaginated not numbered. Remnant of dark brown silk bookmark at the head. <br><br>CONDITION: A lovely copy external binding shows very minimal wear predominantly along the edges and is beautifully ornamented. Gilt edges are brilliant. Hinges are strong and the binding is quite sound. Textblock is unmarked except for previous owner's name written in antiquarian ink "Mary Faith. Hatfield Lodge" on the front flyleaf and an inscription on the second flyleaf "Katharine Martha Launders or Lawnders sp Given by her Uncle Charles Launders on the day of her Christening June 10th 1840."
