John Read (1769-1854) was a lawyer, financier, and philanthropist in 1787 he graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) and then studied law in his father's office in New Castle, Delaware. In 1789, he moved to Philadelphia and married Martha Meredith. Read was appointed Agent General of the United States under the Jay Treaty in 1794 and served in that capacity until 1809. Read was active in Pennsylvania politics, and a leader of the Federalist Party. He held several elected offices, and was a member of Pennsylvania State Senate. From 1819 to 1841, he was president of the Philadelphia Bank, as well as head of other powerful corporations. This perhaps should best be considered a candidate for rebinding. When John Timbs (1801-1875), English antiquary, was in his sixteenth year, he was apprenticed to a druggist and printer at Dorking. He had early shown literary capacity, and when nineteen began to write for the Monthly Magazine. A year later he became secretary to Sir Richard Phillips, its proprietor, and permanently adopted literature as a profession. He was successively editor of the Mirror of Literature, the Harlequin, the Literary World, and sub-editor of the Illustrated London News. He was also founder and first editor of Year-Book of Science and Art. His published works amounted to more than one hundred and fifty volumes. The center of each board is sprinkle decorated in such a way as to show a memorial urn. Binding is worn but quite unusual. James W. Paul Jr. was a wealthy bankermarried to socialite Fanny Drexel (1855-1892). Their estate (Woodcrest) had a Horace Trumbauer designed 51-room, half-timbered mansion for banker. It took just two years to build, but the mix of medieval and Georgian styles was intended to make it look like it had evolved over generations. It is now on the grounds of Cabrini College.
