283 pages. Index, references, appendices, bibliography. Black and white photographic plates. Map endpapers. "The 'miracle' of Dunkirk exercised such a grip upon the public imagination that the fate of the 200,000 British troops left behind after the evacuation has been almost totally ignored. In relating the hitherto untold story of what happened to that forgotten army Major Karslake suggests that there were many people who thought it better that the story should remain untold. The extraordinary situation whereby there was no British overall commander, each British formation coming under a separate French command, the fantastic but nonetheless seriously considered idea of the Breton Redoubt, and the loss of a vast and, at that time, irreplaceable quantity of stores are among the most pertinent issues which Major Karslake describes and discusses." - from dust jacket. Very Good Turkish Paperback. Uncut pages. Soiling and slightly stained on covers. Otherwise a very good set. 12mo. (18 x 11,5 cm). In Turkish. 4 volumes set: ([8], 338 p.; [8], 327 p.; [4], 292 p.; [4], 501 p.). Tom Jones: Sokakta bulunmus bir çocugun hikayesi. [= The history of Tom Jones; A foundling]. 4 volumes set. Translated to Turkish by Mina Urgan. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, often known simply as Tom Jones, is a comic novel by English playwright and novelist Henry Fielding. It is both a Bildungsroman and a picaresque novel. It was first published on 28 February 1749 in London, and is among the earliest English prose works to be classified as a novel. It is the earliest novel mentioned by W. Somerset Maugham in his 1948 book Great Novelists and Their Novels among the ten best novels of the world. Tom Jones is generally regarded as Fielding's greatest book and as an influential English novel. Urgan was a Turkish academic, translator, author and socialist politician. She translated works of Thomas Malory (c. 1415-1471), Henry Fielding (1707-1754), Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), Graham Greene (1904-1991), William Golding (1911-1993), John Galsworthy (1867-1933) and Shakespeare (1564-1616) into Turkish. She was honored with the "Golden Book Award" in 1993. For her work Virginia Woolf, she received the "Sedat Simavi Literature Award" in 1995, and the "Association of People of Letters Honor Award" in 1996. (Wikipedia). First Edition. (Extremely rare. This Manifesto dated London, 3 January 1679 (p.39) and translated into Castilian by July of the same year, appeared at the height of the panic about the popish plot. Commissioned by a man of importance ("un gran sujeto"), the translation aimed to publicize the facts about the persecution of Catholics. The work provides detailed biographies of the principal inventor of the plot - Titus Oates, and of other key witnesses -- William Bedloe and his brother, Miles Prance and Stephen Dugdale. The details of the supposed conspiracy to assassinate the King are examined and the claims of the witnesses challenged. Particular attention is paid to the activities of Oates and the Bedloes in Spain, and their characters and conduct are discredited. The assertions of the Manifesto are supported by the evidence provided in five "Instruments": sworn testimonies by various Spaniards, English Merchants in Bilbao, a letter by Oates himself relating to the Bedloes and a letter of the Rector of the Irish College in Salamanca).
Very Good Persian First Edition of this extremely rare bilingual tractate including Prince Reza Khan's thoughts on Anglo-Persian agreement in1919. Mirza Reza Khan also known as Prince Rezâ Arfa', was a diplomat and poet of the late Qajar period who serviced in Constantinople. During his years of service abroad Reza became acquainted with a number of European political leaders. He was reported to entertain Russian sympathies and was certainly instrumental in negotiating the first Russian government loan to Persia, in 1317 / 1900. Nevertheless, he also appears to have supported the Anglo-Persian Agreement of 1919. In 1332 / 1914 he served as minister of justice (wazîr-e 'adlîya) in Tehran for about a year. This agreement in 1919 was a provisional agreement made between the British and the Persian governments which, if ratified, would have granted the British a paramount position of control over the financial and military affairs of Iran. From the days when Napoleon conceived the idea of invading India with the help of Alexander I, the Tsar of Russia, Great Britain contemplated with apprehension the invasion of India by Russia via Persia and Afghanistan. Under the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907 (q.v.), which divided Persia into rival spheres of influence, southern Persia was assigned to Britain while Russia controlled the northern portion. Later, according to the terms of "The Secret Treaties of Constantinople" of 18 March 1915, Constantinople was promised to Russia, and England was allowed to incorporate within her sphere of influence the neutral zone of Persia.
