Image measures 4.75" x 6.75".<br/><br/> This unusual plan of Prague was published by The London Magazine just a few months following the 1757 Battle of Prague. Oriented with north facing left it depicts the position of the two armies with a key in the bottom margin locating the positions of the artillery reserves batteries and mortars of the Prussian Army on the map. The Battle of Prague part of the Seven Years' War was fought between the Prussians and the Austrians for control of Prague and its surroundings. Although Frederick The Great from Prussia eventually succeeded in forcing the Austrians to retreat he was unable to take the city due to the heavy losses. A beautiful title cartouche adorns the bottom right corner. Most likely engraved by Thomas Kitchin. The map is in very good condition with narrow bottom margin. "The London Magazine or Gentleman%u2019s Monthly Intelligencer" was founded in 1732 as a rival to the popular Gentleman's Magazine. It is England's oldest cultural and literary journal. The magazine has published a wide range of writers from Wordsworth Shelley Keats T.S. Eliot W. H. Auden Evelyn Waugh among others. The first two installments of Thomas De Quincey's "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater" appeared in the 1820 edition of the journal. Title and verso of ad leaf rather darkened and smudged old creases; just a sound copy. One of several contemporary printings of this work for Whiston priority unknown; it was quickly reprinted for other booksellers and in Dublin and elsewhere and saw several reprints in later years. "After the earthquakes of 1750 Sherlock published a 'Pastoral Letter' of which 'ten thousand were sold in two days and fifty thousand have been subscribed for since the first two editions" - DNB quoting Walpole. Not unlike certain extremist religious eccentrics of our own times Sherlock did not miss the opportunity to interpret very natural if unfortunate occurrences as evidence of divine displeasure at such things as plays operas music dancing cock-fighting and prize-fighting during Lent and the common availability in the city's streets of novels "vile abominable Pictures of Lewdness" and "Books in the Instruction of the Unexperienced in all the Mysteries of Iniquity." George Stephen Kemble 21 April 1758 - 5 June 1822 was a successful English theatre manager actor and writer and a member of the famous Kemble family. His sister Sarah Siddons a famous actress. He managed the original Theatre Royal Newcastle for fifteen years 1791-1806. Tiny nicks at head and foot outside image area. Robert Dighton's early work was issued anonymously but by the early 1790s it became increasingly well known and he began etching and publishing under his own name and his success allowed him to open a shop in Charing Cross. In this compendium of communications between the Court of Common Council and George III covering the years 1769-1778 one sees the London court's steadfast objections to trade restrictions placed on the American colonies in 1775 the court's recommendations to "suspend hostilities against our fellow-subjects in North America" and its extended position paper counseling conciliation with the rebellious colonies. The text reports correspondence from the Continental Congress signed by John Hancock and from Richard Price and includes discussion of the Quebec Act of 1774 and the Newfoundland fisheries. Extracted with residue of old binding along spine; moderate tide-mark in lower margin through first half of volume revenue stamps as usual occasional marginal discolorations limited to individual issues; still good and crisp. A close to full year's issues of the original official newspaper of record in England. It was founded in November 1665 while the Court was resident in Oxford due to the plague in London and the early numbers appeared as the OXFORD GAZETTE. Shortly after the Court returned to London beginning with whole number 24 the name was altered to reflect the change and it persisted through the following centuries as the publisher of official information in regard to politics business public notices elections and promotions etc. As a primary record of Britain's affairs both at home and abroad at peace and at war it remains invaluable. In a brown half morocco and cloth slipcase. The county of Middlesex essentially London was the heart of radical politics in England at the time of the Revolution and the greatest pro-American feeling was found in the merchants and working classes of the metropolis. The colonists often appealed directly to Middlesex for support. These works contain petitions relating to the American colonies dating from June 1774 to March 1778 including petitions regarding the Quebec Act in which the people express their concern over the encroachment of Catholicism and French influence in the colony. Likewise it includes the text of a letter from John Hancock to the mayor of London dated September 1775 expressing a hope for peace between Britain and the colonies. Adams notes that these two titles are often found bound together sometimes with other publications of the Council. The petition of the freeholders of Middlesex County concerns the John Wilkes case. Wilkes ran for Parliament and was elected as a radical candidate for Middlesex but was arrested and imprisoned shortly thereafter for seditious libel. Wilkes spoke out against the British war against the American colonies and his opposition to the Crown was a rallying point for the American cause. ESTC T108621 T108605 T43921.
