From dust jacket: Reflecting an increasing concern with her image as an Asian state Australia in 1966 proposed dramatic changes to liberalize her non-Caucasian immigration policy. This thoroughly researched book is the first historically and sociologically comprehensive overview of changing attitudes and resultant policies. Professor London who did the research for this book at the Australian National University in 1966-67 carefully examines the pressure groups competing for ascendancy in Australian political life. He includes an account of foreign and domestic opionion causes celebres regional agreements strategic arrangements and the role of non-Europeans already residing in Australia. In addition the text incoporates previously unreleased information obtained from politicians reformers scholars and other notable Australians. Non-White Immigration and the White Australia Policy evaluates its controversial subject without polemic and offers presciptions for future immigraion reform which might enhance Australia’s position among Asian states. Political scientists and demographers as well as the general public interested in immigration and race relations will find this book required reading. New York University Press, 1970.
