Moderate rubbing loss to spine leather. Toning. <br> Lord Grosvenor was a British peer racehorse owner and art collector. In July of 1764 Lord Grosvenor married Henrietta Vernon daughter of Henry Vernon of Hilton Park Staffordshire. They had four sons. However the marriage was not happy and Henrietta had an affair with Henry Duke of Cumberland the younger brother of George III. The couple were discovered "in flagrante delicto" in 1769 which led to Grosvenor bringing legal action against the Duke for "criminal conversation" adultery. Grosvenor was awarded damages of £10000 which together with costs amounted to £13000. But Grosvenor was also known to be guilty of adultery himself so he could not sue for divorce. 1750378AG1750. London for "The History and Survey of London from its Foundation to the Present Time." c. 1750. Handcoloured Copper Engraving. Beautifully Framed. Size of frame with engraving: 43.5 cm x 33.5 cm. Size of the actual engraving: 36 cm x 24 cm. Frame with some minor signs of wear rubbing to the frame with some discoloration. The engraving in excellent conditon with only faint signs of a former fold to upper left corner. The London Charterhouse is a historic complex of buildings in Smithfield London dating back to the 14th century. It occupies land to the north of Charterhouse Square. The Charterhouse began as and takes its name from a Carthusian priory founded in 1371 and dissolved in 1537. Substantial fragments remain from this monastic period but the site was largely rebuilt after 1545 as a large courtyard house. Thus today it "conveys a vivid impression of the type of large rambling 16th century mansion that once existed all round London". The Charterhouse was further altered and extended after 1611 when it became an almshouse and school endowed by Thomas Sutton. The almshouse a home for gentlemen pensioners still occupies the site today under the name Sutton's Hospital in Charterhouse. Wikipedia unknown

Robert Dighton's early work was issued anonymously but by the early 1790s it became increasingly well known and he began etching and publishing under his own name and his success allowed him to open a shop in Charing Cross. In this compendium of communications between the Court of Common Council and George III covering the years 1769-1778 one sees the London court's steadfast objections to trade restrictions placed on the American colonies in 1775 the court's recommendations to "suspend hostilities against our fellow-subjects in North America" and its extended position paper counseling conciliation with the rebellious colonies. The text reports correspondence from the Continental Congress signed by John Hancock and from Richard Price and includes discussion of the Quebec Act of 1774 and the Newfoundland fisheries.
