A speech at the House of Commons against the monopoly of the Bank of England. <br> In 1697 Parliament had extended the charter for the Bank of England with additional conditions proposed by the bank. One of the key proposals was to stipulate that no other bank or entity akin to the nature of a bank be established in England; ensuring the legal monopoly of the Bank of England. The Nine Year's War had strengthened the newly founded Bank who issued extensive loans to the Government; ensuring that neither could be mutually separated. In this pamphlet the author warns that the Bank of England might become a monopolistic trader of credit due to its low interest rates. The tradesmen and merchants of London vehemently protested against the Bank because they saw it as anticompetitive goliath arranged against their interests. The Bank of England had previously overtaken the Land Bank as the premier trader of land in England. This and the power given by the Government to issue Exchequer notes is the preeminent case against the Bank of England's monopoly. The War of Spanish Secession further increased the government's reliance to the Bank of England who issued it millions of pounds of debt. As a result Chancellor Robert Harley was forced to seek new ways to improve the national finances. This would lead to the creation of the South Seas Company and growth of joint stock companies. In a brown half morocco and cloth slipcase. The county of Middlesex essentially London was the heart of radical politics in England at the time of the Revolution and the greatest pro-American feeling was found in the merchants and working classes of the metropolis. The colonists often appealed directly to Middlesex for support. These works contain petitions relating to the American colonies dating from June 1774 to March 1778 including petitions regarding the Quebec Act in which the people express their concern over the encroachment of Catholicism and French influence in the colony. Likewise it includes the text of a letter from John Hancock to the mayor of London dated September 1775 expressing a hope for peace between Britain and the colonies. Adams notes that these two titles are often found bound together sometimes with other publications of the Council. The petition of the freeholders of Middlesex County concerns the John Wilkes case. Wilkes ran for Parliament and was elected as a radical candidate for Middlesex but was arrested and imprisoned shortly thereafter for seditious libel. Wilkes spoke out against the British war against the American colonies and his opposition to the Crown was a rallying point for the American cause. ESTC T108621 T108605 T43921. The almanac contains an explanation of its use on the title page four full-page portraits of the King of Prussia the Prince of Orange the Duke of Brunswick and the Duke of York common notes including the dominical letters golden number and religious festive days for 1788 beneath a half-page view of St. Paul's Cathedral a calendar an overview of all British Kings and Queens and the dates of their reign a list of mayors and sheriffs 1767-1788 one page listing bank holidays and an overview of the Royal family King George III and Queen Charlotte and their children can be found on the final page. The long series of the London Almanack is according to Bondy of special interest for the beautiful bindings which were issued or commissioned by the publishers themselves.The binding shows signs of wear with some minor loss of material around the foot of the spine and a small worm hole in the fore edge of the back board. The final page shows a light red stain slightly affecting the text. Lacking its matching decorative slipcase. The first ten pages set forth a mocking hour-by-hour account of Londoners' activities on the Sabbath from "lawyers in the Inns of Court lacing their Mistresses Stays paying them their Fees and removing them by Habeas Corpus to their own Lodgings" at eight o'clock in the morning to "Drunkel Quarrels at all Corners of the Streets" at nine o'clock at night p. 10. The author then goes on to condemn among others the excessive lifestyle of the fop the evils of effeminate sodomites and the practice of cursing too frequently. His diatribe against gluttonous eating is illustrated with a diagram of a three-course menu including Soupe au Bourgoise Beef à la Tremblade and Fricasee of Salamanders which he ridicules as having nothing to recommend it "but the Expence and hard Names" p. 31.
