Prima non comune edizione di questo importante studio dedicato alla febbre gialla realizzato dal celebre fisico inglese Nathaniel Edward Bancroft. Nel 1795 nominato medico per le forze armate inglesi iniziò un lungo periodo di servizio all’estero che lo portò a far esperienze nelle Isole Windward , in Portogallo , nel Mediterraneo, al seguito della la Spedizione di Abercromby in Egitto nel 1801 durante il quale acquisì una grande conoscenza su vari tipi di epidemie di febbre gialla. Dopo un periodo di lavoro in Inghilterra, nel 1811 fu inviato in Jamaica dove rimase fino alla fine della sua vita. Il lavoro qui presentato, considerato è considerato come un pietra miliare delle conoscenze mediche della materia per le sue teorie rivoluzionarie. "There is no chance, nor even possibility, of thus generating anything so wonderful and so immutable as contagion, which, resembling animals and vegetables in the faculty of propagating itself, must, like them, have been the original work of our common Creator. ... As well might we revive the for-ever exploded doctrine of equivocal generation" (Essay, p. 109). Arrivò infatti ad intuire come le febbri gialle doveva essere individuate come una febbre di origine malarica. L’opera contiene due tavole con la planimetria dell’Old Baily la Corte della Corona, il Tribunale Penale Centrale di Londra, che giudica i principali casi criminali della Grande Londra e, in via eccezionale, di altre parti dell'Inghilterra. Esso sorge nel luogo nel quale si trovava la Prigione medievale di Newgate, in una strada denominata appunto Old Bailey, che segue il percorso delle mura fortificate della City (dette bailey) e che ha dato il nome alla corte. Un volume con altri scritti sulle febbri gialle di Bancroft uscì nel1817. Esemplare in prima edizione e, a parte la mancanza delle pagine di indice, in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione e ancora in barbe. Opera non comune. Rare.
