The major article which starts on the front page is the death of the Prince Consort Prince Albert he of course was married to Queen Victoria. There are a number of wood engravings contained in this issue including one of divers working on the Westminster Bridge. This is a relatively early depiction of diving equipment. </p> books

1865443721865. <p>City of London Truss Society. Archive of 65 documents including autograph letters signed mostly to John Colley Taunton d. 1858 printed reports and other ephemera. 1822-65. Some documents soiled or dampstained a few with tears but overall good to very good. Calendar of the archive included.</p> <p> The City of London Truss Society a highly successful British charitable organization began operating in 1807 and continued well into the twentieth century Sir Geoffrey Keynes the well-known surgeon and bibliographer served on the Society's medical staff in the 1930s. A notice published in the Philosophical Magazine in 1813 describes the genesis of the Society:</p> <p> "From the great number of persons among the laboring poor who were afflicted with hernia and for whose relief no adequate provision existed on the 14th of October 1807 Dr. Squire Dr. Herdman John Taunton the Rev. H. G. Watkins James Horton Michael Bartlett Joseph Atkinson John Middleton John Gardner and John Whitford met at the City Dispensary and formed themselves into a Society 'for the relief of the ruptured poor throughout the Kingdom the City of London Truss Society'" Philosophical Magazine 43 1813: 316. </p> <p> John Taunton 1769-1821 surgeon to London's city dispensary was appointed the Truss Society's first surgeon; after his death his son John Colley Taunton took over the post remaining there until his own death in 1858. By 1813 the Society was treating nearly 2000 patients annually; by Taunton's death in 1821 this number had increased to over 3500; and by the end of the nineteenth century the Society was employing three surgeons and seeing over 10000 patients per year. </p> <p>The archive we are offering contains 65 documents of which all but seven are handwritten. Of the 58 handwritten documents the majority are letters to and a few from John Colley Taunton. The most notable correspondent represented here is physiologist and surgeon Benjamin Collins Brodie 1783-1862 whose letter to Taunton advises him on a urinary tract infection in a patient. Four of the letters are from surgeon William Kingdon 1789-1863; two of these recommend poor patients to the Society's care. 31 letters are from Samuel Cartwright 1789-1864 a dentist and one of the vice-presidents of the Truss Society; nearly all of his letters have to do with donations to the Society and several include the exact amounts given. Another group of letters is from Mary Tanner presumably a patient; two of these letters include prescription notes in what is presumably J. C. Taunton's hand. Also included in this archive are three of the Society's annual reports for the years 1862-1864; a printed subscription card; and two printed invitations from the Society addressed to Walter K. Frontis. port. 1 f. 62 pp. <br><br>John Colet 14671519 Dean of St. Paul's seems in 1508 to have begun to think about "applying his patrimony to education by the reconstitution of St Paul's Cathedral school in new premises reflecting a preoccupation with education as prerequisite for spiritual regeneration" DNB online. He "opened the doors to St Pauls School in 1509 to educate boys 'from all nacions and countres indifferently' St. Paul's School website.<br>Â Â Â Â Elegantly bound and handsomely printed this is the first edition of this collection for use of the boys of the school and is comprised of "Preces quotidianae ut celebrantur in scholâ Paulina" and "Catechismus cum ordine Confirmationis." The prayers were first published in 1642 and are in Latin while the catechism is in Greek on versos of leaves and Latin opposite on rectos. The engraved frontispiece portrait of Colet is by John Taylor Wedgwood 17831856 a cousin of Josiah Wedgwood.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Late 19th-century bookplate of the Rev. George H. Culshaw; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard small booklabel "AHA" at rear.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary green straight-grain goat spine gilt extra; both boards with a gilt double-rule outer border and an inner center frame of single gilt rule with large gilt corner devices. Woodcut emblem 3 x 4 1/2 inches at head of advertisement. Two vertical and three horizontal folds. Contemporary manuscript inscription "June 1804" in left margin beside engraving in first leaf; contemporary manuscript inscriptions dated November 8 1804 on blank verso of first leaf referring to policy rates in Charleston. Half-inch tear at gutter of first leaf repaired with tape on verso. Portion of upper corner at fore-edge and portion of margin at gutter lacking from second leaf supplied in later paper. Second leaf somewhat faded. Else near fine. Bifolium of two broadsides for the Phoenix fire insurance company of London at the time of the opening of its first agency in New York. The Phoenix Assurance Company still operating today as Phoenix Life Ltd. was founded in 1782 by a consortium of sugar refiners in London seeking more reasonable rates for the insurance of their risky holdings against fire. By the mid-1780s Phoenix had established itself as a successful fire insurer across the whole of Great Britain for a wide array of businesses and homes. In 1785 the Phoenix Company sold its first North American policy at Charleston and the first policy in New York was accepted two years later. It was not until 1804 however that Phoenix began establishing actual agencies in the New World breaking ground in New York with the appointment of Theophylact and Andrew Bache as agents there. <br> <br> The first leaf is a printed policy form for the Phoenix Company in New York never filled in. The second leaf is an advertising broadside for the company containing a table of rates for New York subscribers and a detailed list of conditions for new policies. The handsome copper engraving at the top of the form leaf depicts a helmeted goddess presumably Athena on a pedestal bearing a shield stamped with the word "PROTECTION" and the image of a phoenix rising from ashes. Behind the figure is a nighttime scene of the burning remains of a building and a family of victims spilling onto the street. A team of firefighters is extinguishing the flames with a pump-operated hose and behind them is a scaffolded building under repair. The engraved caption reads: "PHOENIX FIRE OFFICE LOMBARD STREET and CHARING CROSS." A similar illustration in woodcut is included at the head of the "Proposals" broadside. Here the goddess is the only figure depicted. On her left are both the burning building and the new construction; on her right is a ship at sea engulfed in flames. The hooks and axes of the firefighter adorn the sides of the cut. <br> <br> The Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature at Harvard lists a copy of the Boston variant of the advertising broadside. The only located institutional holding of this New York issue however is at the Connecticut Historical Society. No records of the printed form in any issue have been located. A rare and interesting pair of documents from the early history of international insurance. KRESS B4839 variant.
