James Henry Leigh Hunt (1784-1859) was a famous English poet, critic, and journalist. He was a friend of the most eminent literary men of his time, and his home was the gathering place for such notable writers as Hazlitt, Lamb, Keats, and Shelley. With his brother John, Hunt established in 1808 the Examiner, a liberal weekly to which he contributed political articles. Because of an outspoken article casting aspersions on the prince regent, the brothers were imprisoned from 1813 to 1815, but they continued to edit the journal from jail. In 1822, Hunt joined Shelley and Byron in Italy and launched the Liberal (1822-23), which proved a failure. During other periods Hunt contributed to the Indicator (1819-21), the Tatler (1830-32), and Leigh Hunt's London Journal (1834-35). A noted dramatic and literary critic, he was one of the first to praise the genius of Shelley and Keats. His literary fame rests chiefly on his miscellaneous light essays such as are included here. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W140

On the front flyleaf there is a author's manuscript inscription: "With Lord Mahon's Compliments." He was undersecretary for foreign affairs (1834-1835) in Sir Robert Peel's first ministry and secretary of the board of control (1845-1846). As a legislator he favored repeal of the corn laws and secured passage of the Copyright Act of 1842. pp. xii, 285. Age stained. ** Presented by the Author to Rev. Erastus Scranton. 12mo. Original full cloth binding, embossed in blind. Gilt lettered spine. Very slight loss at extremities. Hardbound. First Edition. Rev. Erastus Scranton was born in 1777 at East Guilford, CT. Educated at Yale College, he became Pastor of The Congregational Church of Burlington, CT from Jan. 1830 to May 1840. After retiring from the pulpit he operated his farm on Scranton Mountain, now Savarese Lane, and was Town Treasurer for a number of years. His hearing became quite impaired, the Congregation voted that he should sit beside the minister so that he could hear the service. He lived in the Barton House, (Later the Farmington Savings Bank) in the Center. He died Oct. 5, 1861. On the author see: From the NY Times: May 27, 1864 : "Some years ago there appeared in the Springfield Republican a series of letters from Europe, signed by "Dunn Browne," which were widely copied and much admired for their sprightly vivacity. They ware from the pen of Mr. SAMUEL FISKE, a graduate of Amherst College, in the class of 1848, and the author of a well-known college text-book, a translation of ESCHENBERG's Manual of Greek and Roman Antiquities. Mr. FISKE was a clergyman, settled at Madison, Conn., when the war broke out; but he left the pulpit for the field, and dropped the "reverend" for a Lieutenant's title. After fighting bravely in the several battles, he was taken prisoner by the rebels, and detained for some time in Richmond. During the battle of the Wilderness, Captain -- for he was promoted from a Lieutenancy - Fiske was mortally wounded. He was conveyed to Fredericksburg, where, in a private house, he received the attention of personal friends, and of his wife and other members of his family. His death has taken from the Union ranks a brave, intelligent officer; from literary circles, a lively, versatile writer, and from the newspaper world, an admirable "war correspondent." TRAVEL/8
