In Paris he studied chemistry under the Scottish royal physician William Davidson. John Evelyn visited Digby at his laboratory on 7 November 1651 and was given his 'powder with which he affirmed that he had fixed mercury before the late King' and 'a dissolvent of calx of gold' Evelyn Diary 3.20 48. Finely rebound in full polished calf some foxing and discoloration to title along with an old owner's mark title trimmed a little close at bottom scattered light foxing; a nice clean copy overall. The best Latin edition with the added material by Papin and Mohyus 8 722 42pp. Digby was a renowned world traveler who supposedly spoke 10 or 12 languages - he collected recipes and scientific discoveries to bring back to England. The basis of this work is an extension of a speech he gave in Montpelier a few years previous on the Powder of Sympathy where an element of the weapon was treated in order to cure the wound it caused - usually by removing the bandage from a musket wound treating the bandage with the powder and thereby curing the wound. The theory was remarkable for its high levels of both nonsense and popularity. Hudibras mocked the idea in the following year and a 1687 joke version had it performed at a set time on a ship born dog in order to determine longitude. Size: Quarto 4to. Quantity Available: 1. "The publication of 'The Life of Jesus Critically Considered' aroused a storm of controversy; its revolutionary thesis and content were violently attacked and wrenched out of context. Strauss's principal objective was to explode not only the traditional orthodox view of the Gospel accounts of the life of Jesus but also earlier rationalistic views." PMM p. 182. Strauss's first and greatest work a crucial text in the history of biblical studies and of religious scholarship generally. The first consistent systematic application of the then quasi-Hegelian notion of myth to the New Testament and early Christianity offering an epoch-making interpretation of the Christ of the Gospels as the unintentional product of a "mythos" of Messianic expectation already present in ancient Hebrew culture. The book was a scandal which adversely affected Strauss's entire career offending rationalist and orthodox biblical literalists alike Printing and the Mind of Man 300. 233662 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Garmisch July 20 1908. On lined paper. In French with translation.

An important letter in which Strauss discusses the forthcoming Dresden Berlin and Monte Carlo premières of his opera Elektra.

". Tell Raoul Gunsbourgh that I am sure to finish the score for Elektra by September that everything will be printed by the beginning of December and that the French première at Monte Carlo can take place towards the end of February or the beginning of March. I myself will be able to conduct Elektra at Monte Carlo if all circumstances permit. I want to personally assist in the première of Elektra at Dresden at the end of January. "

Very slightly soiled; creased at folds. As promised Strauss completed the score for Elektra on September 22 1908. The opera premièred at the Dresden Hofoper on January 25 1909 followed shortly thereafter by a performance in Berlin on February 15. Although publically announced in newspapers such as the New York Times the Monte Carlo première appears not to have eventuated. The French language première of the opera was actually given by the Manhattan Opera Company on February 1 1910; Strauss accorded the first American performance of Elektra to this fledgling company of Oscar Hammerstein's as something of an act of revenge upon the Metropolitan Opera for banning his previous opera Salome.

Raoul Gunsbourgh 1860-1955 was the longest-serving director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo his career there spanning almost six decades. unknown books
