a89773One bound volume of 4 original first edition works refuting the conclusions of David Strauss. The 4 works are: 1 Beitrage zur Spekulativen Philosophie von Carl Friedrich Goschel Berlin 1838 284p. 2 Der Historische Christus und die Philosophie von Julius Schaller Leipzig 1838 137p. 3 Kritik der Principien der Strauss'schen Glaubenslehre Leipzig 1845 72p. 4 Die Speculative Dogmatik von Dr. David Freidr. Struss Parts one and two complete Tubingen 1841 and 1842 102p. 132p. All works in German. All bound in one large octavo volume with 3/4 dark brown leather with brown marbled boards. Binding secure; some light toning and foxing and wear in text. Some curling of page edges. The articles are of various sizes but binding of all is nice and secure. The works are of slightly different sizes. Laid in are two nineteenth century newspaper articles about Strauss. David Strauss 1808 - 1874 began as a Christian but was led by his studies to doubt the historical Jesus and to see the Bible as myth. Wikipedia cites the Earl of Shaftesbury announcing in reaction to a work of Strauss that it was "the most pestilential book ever vomited out of the jaws of hell" which sort of gives one an ideal of vitriol Strauss faced. Gilt spine title. No ownership marks. Good Plus. Pictures available on request. . hardcover

Quarter black leather cloth covered boards leather spine with raised bands tooled with gilt in six compartments with "Dances" in gilt at the top of the spine the initials "N.L.D" in gilt on the front board and blue endpapers.
