The best Latin edition with the added material by Papin and Mohyus 8 722 42pp. Digby was a renowned world traveler who supposedly spoke 10 or 12 languages - he collected recipes and scientific discoveries to bring back to England. The basis of this work is an extension of a speech he gave in Montpelier a few years previous on the Powder of Sympathy where an element of the weapon was treated in order to cure the wound it caused - usually by removing the bandage from a musket wound treating the bandage with the powder and thereby curing the wound. The theory was remarkable for its high levels of both nonsense and popularity. Hudibras mocked the idea in the following year and a 1687 joke version had it performed at a set time on a ship born dog in order to determine longitude. Size: Quarto 4to. Quantity Available: 1. "Digby set himself the task of examining on mechanical principles the concepts of current Paracelsian chemistry especially alchemy and the 'universal spirit' giving life to all things. In Paris he studied chemistry under the Scottish royal physician William Davidson. John Evelyn visited Digby at his laboratory on 7 November 1651 and was given his 'powder with which he affirmed that he had fixed mercury before the late King' and 'a dissolvent of calx of gold' Evelyn Diary 3.20 48. Digby's experiments often involved faulty observation and conclusions that went further than the facts allowed. A prime example was the celebrated 'sympathetic powder'. Made from dried green vitriol this was a variant of the well-known Paracelsian 'weapon salve' which cured wounds by being applied not to the patient but to the offending weapon.
