P004161Berlin: Eden-Saloon 1961-62. Octavo 21 × 14.6 cm. Original staple-stitchd pictorial wrappers; 24 pp. Last leaf lightly stained and creased; else very good. An unrecorded memento of one of the most colorful chapters of post-war West Berlin this privately published journal was distributed to guests of Rolf Eden's "Eden Saloon" a flashy nightclub just off the Kurfürstendamm. A jew born in Berlin Eden exemplified the German Wirtschaftswunder like few entrepreneurs. He was one of the first to invite DJs to his club's parties popularized striptease during a conservative era and crafted a reputation as a flashy playboy that continues to live on today: at 86 Eden is commonly referred to as Germany's "last playboy." Published after the club moved to Damaschkestr. but before Eden opened the "New Eden" in 1962. Unnumbered possibly a first or "zero" issue. Also included is a leaflet about Eden Saloon's participation in the 20th Berlinale Berliner Filmfestspiele.<br /> <br /> As of February 2024 neither item is recorded in KVK OCLC. unknown

Both are for Topaze starring Frank Morgan Phoebe Foster and Clarence Derwent weeks of February 17th and April 14 1930. Topaze would be adapted into a film by D'Abbadie D'Arrast in 1933 starring John Barrymore and Myrna Loy. <br /> <br /> <br /> The programs contain fantastic advertisements for tobacco near beer food clothing tires candy and everything a 1930s New York theater-goer might want. Each includes a short story "The Metropolitan Plan" by Jack Woodford and "The Man Who Forgot" by John T. Kiernan. Also notable in these issues are the two page spreads for Old Gold Cigarettes with art by Jazz Age cartoonist John Held Jr. 1889-1958. . New York Theater Program Corporation unknown

Colour-illustrated softcovers cover art of the Brandenburg Gate in gilt blue blue & gilt borders globe logo at upper fore-edge dustsoiling shelfwear still VG copy. First edition of this scarce ocean liner promotional brochure for the SS Berlin built by Bremer Vulkan and commissioned in Sept. 1925 making the North German Lloyd Run from Bremen - Southampton - Cherbourg - New York. She would make runs until chartered by the Nazi Party in 1939 as a Party Cruise Ship and converted to Hospital Ship during World War II. These photographs show such amenities for first class passengers as spacious promenades salons writing room library nicely appointed staterooms and exercise gym. The accommodations for 2nd & 3rd Class passengers were decidedly poorer. The ship was salvaged by the Soviet Union in 1949 and served as the Admiral Nakhimov a cruise ship transported soldiers to Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crises was later rammed and sunk by the Soviet freighter Pyotr Vasev and 423 of the 1234 on board perished. According to the document Cypel sought 'damages under restitution law for the loss by deprivation of machinery and materials of his printing office in Warsaw . Early in 1943 the printing office was inspected by witness Höhne . chief engineer in Department II of the newspaper publsihing house Cracow-Warsaw; the "Polygraph-Trust" in the German government consulted him as an expert to give his opinion on the serviceability of machines in Jewish printing enterprises.' The claimant's petition is dismissed without costs there being no 'prima facie proof of transfer of printing machines and accessories from Warsaw into the material area in 1943.' Silver gelatin negative photostatic print of two documents: 3pp 4to i.e. each of the three pages on 19.5 x 24 cm. leaf. The first page of Goschen’s two-page ‘Aide Mémoire’ on a separate leaf and the second page and von Jagow’s note on different leaves of a bifolium. In good condition lightly aged. N.B. The entire item is a photostatic copy. Reproduced at the head and down the left margin of the first page of Goschen’s text are manuscript notes in German including at top left: "A15930 pr. 4. August 1914 pm. / Von Sir E. Goschen / heute Nachmittag überprüft / 4/8 J." and the copy also includes at the foot of this page a clue regarding the source: the typed words ‘Russland 104’. Goschen’s typed text unsigned begins: ‘Aide Mémoire / Sir Edward Goschen has been informed by Sir Edward Grey the British Foreign Minister that His Majesty the King of the Belgians has addressed to His Majesty King George an appeal for diplomatic intervention on behalf of Belgium.’ The well-known text explains that the German government’s proposal of ‘friendly neutrality entailing free passage through Belgian territory . has been categorically refused by Belgium as a flagrant violation of the Law of Nations’. The British government ask for ‘an assurance that the demand made upon Belgium will not be proceeded with’ and ‘Sir Edward Goschen is instructed to ask for an immediate reply.’ Von Jagow’s note reads: ‘Ich habe Sir E. Goschen geantwortet daß wir die belgische Neutralität aus Nothwehr hätten verletzen müssen ich habe alle unsere zwingenden Gründe auseinandergesetzt und alle in London abgegebenen Versicherungen nochmals wiederholt. / Jagow.’ See Image.
