His chronological narrative was meant to chart the various world-historical developments and circumstances which ultimately led to the confluence of Mr. Lewis' Continental ancestors and those of the Mayflower Colony and it extended even to his own lifetime. Housed in altogether fifteen portfolio volumes the project was the culmination of decades of painstaking research and discerning collecting of the highest order. Good. - An autograph document dated August 29 1868 penned in a secretarial hand on 13-3/8 inch high by 8-3/8 inch wide creamy white paper signed "Friedrich Wilhelm Kpz Crown Prince" by the future Emperor and King of Prussia. The document is addressed to the Royal General in Command of the Army Corps at Breslau who at the time was Wilhelm von Tumpling. The document orders that a particular Second Lieutenant be named his Ordnance Officer during Army Corps maneuvers in mid-September. The document is annotated and signed on the verso by four officers in the chain of command. The first dated August 31 from Breslau is signed by the Prussian General der Kavallerie Wilhelm von Tumpling. Wilhelm von Tumpling 1809-1884 commanded a division in the Austro-Prussian War and the VI Army Corps during the Franco-Prussian War. Folded several times vertically and once horizontally with short tears to the top and bottom edges of the vertical folds and a longer tear along most of the horizontal center fold which has been repaired with clear archival document tape. There is early tape repair to two of the short tears at the top and bottom of the document.Frederick Friedrich III 1831-1888. the German Emperor and King of Prussia for 99 days. The son of the King of Prussia Emperor Wilhelm I Frederick was raised in his family's military tradition. Although a reluctant warrior Frederick served in high levels of command in the 3 wars that led to German unification. In the Second Schleswig War of 1864 he was an advisor on the staff of Field Marshal Wrangel. During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 he commanded the Prussian Second Army. He turned a potential stalemate into a Prussian victory at the Battle of Koenigraetz. In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 he was Commander of the Third Army leading his forces to victories in the Battles of Wissembourg and Worth. At the Siege of Sedan his troops surrounded the French army and captured Emperor Napoleon III. Frederick was a vigorous opponent of Bismarck and was popular with ordinary soldiers. August 29, 1868.

Early half calf and marbled papered boards with all edges marbled and matching marbled endpapers; leather a little rubbed and marked with light tidemarks near the joints of the first volume; tidemark to the frontispiece; scattered foxing; an excellent set. The frontispiece with an image size 188 × 114 mm without any margins has been mounted on thick paper; presumably this was done at the time the book was bound in the nineteenth century. Prince Adalbert 1811-1873 was a Prussian naval theorist and admiral; several journeys led him between 1826 and 1842 to the Netherlands Britain Russia Turkey Greece and Brazil Wikipedia. He spent the last four months on 1842 in Brazil. Alexander von Humboldt makes the following comments in his three-page introduction to this translation: 'this interesting Work . conducts us through Brazil to the mouth of the Amazon River and through this into one of its important tributaries the Xingu the course of which is now explored for the first time. The Journal of Travels printed originally only for the perusal of his friends . is not in the strict sense of the word a scientific book; nevertheless it contains observations and views of nature and customs which reflect a vivid picture of the scenes which the Prince witnessed and passed through. Instruction is imparted in the most pleasing manner when an unaffected simplicity and an absence of all pretension pervade a work like this'. This set was purchased at the dispersal sale of the Hope family's historic property 'Wolta Wolta' at Clare in South Australia; there is some serendipity in this given the Schomburgk family's close connection with the state. Richard Schomburgk accompanied his explorer brother Robert on an expedition in 1840-44 to British Guiana as botanist and historian. He later published the three-volume account of the expedition before emigrating to South Australia where he was a pioneering vigneron and an influential head of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. 2 items. First and only edition of this richly illustrated scarce and uncommon book was printed for the German Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife Augusta Victoria the commemoration of the construction of Alman Çesmesi i.e. German Fountain in Constantinople and the first anniversary of the Wilhelm II's travel to the Ottoman Empire in 1898. The fountain's design was drawn by the architect Spitta and constructed by the architect Schoele with the German architect Carlitzik and Italian architect Joseph Anthony working on the project. The fountain was built in Germany and then transported piece by piece to Istanbul reassembled in its current site and officially opened on January 27 1901 on the birthday of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Wilhelm II's voyage to the Levant in 1898 was a state visit that the German Emperor undertook in the Ottoman Empire between 25 October and 12 November 1898. The Kaiser started his journey to the Ottoman Eyalets with Istanbul on 16 October 1898; then he went by yacht to Haifa on 25 October. After visiting Jerusalem and Bethlehem the Kaiser went back to Jaffa to embark on Beirut where he took the train passing Aley and Zahlé to reach Damascus on 7 November. This book is richly illustrated including many views of the cities of this voyage's destinations like Jerusalem Damascus Beirut Beirut Jafa Baalbek etc. On 10 November Wilhelm went to visit Baalbek before heading to Beirut to board his ship back home on 12 November. His visit spurred interest in the German Templer colonies in Palestine. One of the Kaiser's traveling companions Colonel Joseph von Ellrichshausen initiated the formation of a society for the advancement of the German settlements in Palestine named the Gesellschaft Zur Förderung der Deutschen Ansiedlungen in Palästina in Stuttgart. It enabled the settlers to acquire land for new settlements by offering them low-interest loans. A subsequent second wave of German settlers founded Wilhelma named after the Kaiser now called Bnei Atarot in 1902 near Lod Walhalla 1903 near the original Jaffa colony followed by Bethlehem of Galilee 1906. The German Settlement Society successfully encouraged some of the Templars to return to the official national Protestant Church. The non-Templar colony of Waldheim now Alonei Abba was subsequently founded next to Bethlehem of Galilee in 1907 by proselytized Templers now affiliated with the Old-Prussian State Church. The visit resulted in the highest-profile political event in the life of Theodor Herzl considered the founder of Zionism. Through the efforts of William Hechler via Frederick I Grand Duke of Baden Herzl publicly met Wilhelm II three times during the voyage once in Istanbul on 15 October 1898 and twice in Palestine 29 October and 2 November.
