Initially published in three installments by Frederick II's private press at the palace of Sanssouci near Berlin the volumes were read as part of the curriculum at the Prussian Academy of Sciences and considered as the fourth volume of Frederick's Oeuvres du Philosophe de Sans Souci The works of the philosopher of Sans Souci. Small octavo disbound with part of the original gilt spine intact. In very good condition. A nice example. Frederick the Great was King of Prussia from 1740 until 1786 the longest reign of any Hohenzollern king. His most significant accomplishments during his reign included his military victories his reorganization of Prussian armies his patronage of the arts and the Enlightenment in Prussia and his final success against great odds in the Seven Years' War. Frederick was the last titled King in Prussia and declared himself King of Prussia after achieving full sovereignty for all historical Prussian lands. An "enlightened despot" Frederick II's first concern was the strength and discipline of his army; he also instituted important legal and penal reforms set up trade monopolies to create new industries promoted education and accomplished internal improvements such as drainage projects roads and canals. He wrote remarkably well on politics history military science and philosophy and almost always in French counting among his circle of educated men such personalities as Voltaire d'Alembert Le Mettrie and Maupertuis.
