22267Berlin; 4 September 1820. The letter announces the transfer to Berlin of 'Monsieur de Wagner' London Chargé d'Affaires of the the Kingdom of Württemberg resident at 42 Alpha Place Regent's Park. The recipient Sir John Coxe Hippisley whom George III had described as a 'busy man' and 'grand intriguer' had retired from public life two years previously but was clearly still involved in diplomatic affairs. 2pp 4to. Bifolium. Forty-one lines of neatly-written text addressed to 'Sir J C Hippisley Bart. Lower Grosvenor Street.' On aged and worn paper with short closed tears at edges of folds. On paper with two prominent circular watermarks one a regal eagle with motto 'Gott bewahre sein Reich' the other a portrait of 'Friedrich Wilhelm III Koenig von Preussen'. Wagner begins with 'the most humble and anxious apology' for his late letter which he hopes to excuse by explaining the 'circumstances': 'Soon after my arrival in Stuttgart I had the honor to see the King and to deliver your letters and parcels; I delivered also those to the Queen Dowager Augusta of Brusnwick wife of Frederick I who had died in 1816 in her own hands as well as to Baron Maucler who probably has written to you since'. Wagner delayed writing to Hippisley as Maucler had 'promised me a letter for you'. Wagner was 'received very graciously and promoted to the rank of Councillor of Legation'. A bout of ill health was cured by a two-month tour of Switzerland. 'The King and Queen as you will have heard were in Italy and derived benefit from the baths tho' as yet without the desired effect for the prospect of the throne' i.e. no pregnancy. On Wagner's return to Stuttgart 'the situation as Chargé d'Affaires at Berlin was offered to me under favorable conditions' which he accepted. The previous holder Count Mandelsloh is to be Wagner's 'second successor in London' and will 'present you this himself and I beg to recommend him to you most particularly for you will find him worthy in every respect of the kind reception and confidence with which I have been honored by you myself'. He will write to Hippisley 'more at length on another opportunity when I shall have more leasure sic'. In the meantime he presents his respects 'to Lady and to Miss Hippisley as well as to Mr. Hippisley'. One bound volume containing 52 manuscript leaves of music on the versos and rectos of each sheet bound in at the front and 10 printed scores totaling 116 pages of music. Text in German. Oblong quarto. Measures 13.5" x 10.25". Contemporary half morocco and cloth boards with "Varieties-Piano" stamped in gilt on the spine. Scuffing at the joints and corners scattered foxing a few early wove-paper repairs about very good. A unique custom bound collection of popular waltzes and opera arrangements for piano most likely assembled by a Viennese-based musician in the 1850s. Only one of the manuscript arrangements is signed and dated: "Clementine Steiner … März 1853.†Most of the printed scores were published by the famous Viennese music publisher and composer Anton Diabelli in the Euterpe series from the 1840s and 1850s.<br /> <br /> The manuscript leaves consists of about 17 short pieces and 18 longer works most of which range from four to 10 pages each. Among the scores in manuscript are piano arrangements from Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer Rienzi Lohengrin and Tannhäuser. Also included are arrangements from operas by Verdi Donizetti Meyerbeer and Gounod. The music is neatly written in ink with one short section in pencil most likely in two different hands with the titles tempos and lyrics in German. Bound-in after the manuscript scores are 10 printed scores ranging from three to 13 pages each. These include waltzes by Josef Strauss H.C. Lumbye Joseph Lanner and others; and various extracts from operas by Bellini arranged for piano by Anton Diabelli. A unique and pleasing collection of waltzes and operatic melodies from Vienna’s golden age. A detailed list of the individual arrangements and printed scores is available upon request. Ant. Softcover disbound & removed in the distant past from a larger collection of bound periodicals with remnants of the spine. iv 48 & 2 pages illustrated with 2 full-page plates and 2 full-page illustrations including a bright polychrome lithographic frontispiece of a peacock and other birds by Pinkerton Wagner & McGuigan of Philadelphia. There is light dampstaining along the front and bottom edges of the pages. Good. <p>The first appearance of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Drowne's Wooden Image" which was later published in his collection of stories "Mosses From an Old Manse". In an August 1844 letter to James Russell Lowell Edgar Allan Poe writes: "Do you ever see Mr. Hawthorne He is a man of rare genius. A day or two since I met with a sketch by him called 'Browne's Wooden Image' - delicious. The leading idea however is suggested by Michael Angelo's couplet."<p>Referred to as the "Cradle of Liberty" Faneuil Hall in Boston hosted many important meetings before the Revolution. Rebuilt in 1762 a third story was added by Charles Bulfinch in 1805 and a weathervane subsequently adorned its steeple. Considered one of the most noted steeple adornment in Boston this weathervane with its grasshopper sculpture was inspired by the character of Shem Drowne the protagonist of Hawthorne's "Browne's Wooden Image".<p>Early experimenters in the field of lithography James McGuigan with Edward J. Pinkerton and Thomas Wagner formed the firm of Pinkerton Wagner & McGuigan to produce book and periodical illustrations. From their 100 Chestnut Street location they produced plates for "Godey's Magazine" and the "Guide to Laurel Hill Cemetery Near Philadelphia" among others. Their experiments in the art of lithography led to their being awarded the silver medal for "polychromic lithography" at the 1844 Franklin Institute Exhibition of American Manufacturers.
