One bound volume containing 52 manuscript leaves of music on the versos and rectos of each sheet bound in at the front and 10 printed scores totaling 116 pages of music. Text in German. Oblong quarto. Measures 13.5" x 10.25". Contemporary half morocco and cloth boards with "Varieties-Piano" stamped in gilt on the spine. Scuffing at the joints and corners scattered foxing a few early wove-paper repairs about very good. A unique custom bound collection of popular waltzes and opera arrangements for piano most likely assembled by a Viennese-based musician in the 1850s. Only one of the manuscript arrangements is signed and dated: "Clementine Steiner … März 1853.†Most of the printed scores were published by the famous Viennese music publisher and composer Anton Diabelli in the Euterpe series from the 1840s and 1850s.<br /> <br /> The manuscript leaves consists of about 17 short pieces and 18 longer works most of which range from four to 10 pages each. Among the scores in manuscript are piano arrangements from Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer Rienzi Lohengrin and Tannhäuser. Also included are arrangements from operas by Verdi Donizetti Meyerbeer and Gounod. The music is neatly written in ink with one short section in pencil most likely in two different hands with the titles tempos and lyrics in German. Bound-in after the manuscript scores are 10 printed scores ranging from three to 13 pages each. These include waltzes by Josef Strauss H.C. Lumbye Joseph Lanner and others; and various extracts from operas by Bellini arranged for piano by Anton Diabelli. Softcover disbound & removed in the distant past from a larger collection of bound periodicals with remnants of the spine. iv 48 & 2 pages illustrated with 2 full-page plates and 2 full-page illustrations including a bright polychrome lithographic frontispiece of a peacock and other birds by Pinkerton Wagner & McGuigan of Philadelphia. There is light dampstaining along the front and bottom edges of the pages. Good. <p>The first appearance of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Drowne's Wooden Image" which was later published in his collection of stories "Mosses From an Old Manse". In an August 1844 letter to James Russell Lowell Edgar Allan Poe writes: "Do you ever see Mr. Hawthorne He is a man of rare genius. A day or two since I met with a sketch by him called 'Browne's Wooden Image' - delicious. The leading idea however is suggested by Michael Angelo's couplet."<p>Referred to as the "Cradle of Liberty" Faneuil Hall in Boston hosted many important meetings before the Revolution. Rebuilt in 1762 a third story was added by Charles Bulfinch in 1805 and a weathervane subsequently adorned its steeple. Considered one of the most noted steeple adornment in Boston this weathervane with its grasshopper sculpture was inspired by the character of Shem Drowne the protagonist of Hawthorne's "Browne's Wooden Image".<p>Early experimenters in the field of lithography James McGuigan with Edward J. Pinkerton and Thomas Wagner formed the firm of Pinkerton Wagner & McGuigan to produce book and periodical illustrations. From their 100 Chestnut Street location they produced plates for "Godey's Magazine" and the "Guide to Laurel Hill Cemetery Near Philadelphia" among others. Their experiments in the art of lithography led to their being awarded the silver medal for "polychromic lithography" at the 1844 Franklin Institute Exhibition of American Manufacturers. First editions of these two works reproducing and detailing the famed 1888 Cyclorama panorama by the noted architect Buhlmann and artist Alexander von Wagner designed and intended to feed public appetite for visual spectacle in the 19th Century prior to the emergence of film and cinema. With exquisite attention to detail this massive piece emulated the performance Cycloramas touring the Americas and Europe such as the “Battle of Gettysburg†“Missionary Ridge†and offered the viewers an immersive experience. This triumph capped the victorious 312 A.D. campaign by Emperor Constantine in which he had defeated the competing Emperor Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge where Constantine had his vision of the Cross and converted to Christianity and adopted the banner standard bearing the initial letters in the name of Christ. Of additional interest is that even though the original was eventually destroyed von Wagner’s & Buhlmann’s work inspired Yadegar Asisi to create his massive 27 meter by 107 meter 2014 panorama opened in Dresden at the Dresden Panorama Museum where Rome’s cityscape can be viewed from a tower below a dome. Unbound as published. 4 p. <p><br /> Extremely scarce report of the Board of the “Richard Wagner-Theaters†Bayreuth Festspielhaus with Wagner’s invitation to the upcoming rehearsals.<br /> <p><p><br /> In this brochure the Board announces the dates of the three weeks of the four-evening rehearsals of Wagner’s “The Ring of the Nibelung†which could be attended only by the patrons; shows a sample of the Patron-card; quotes Wagner’s invitation for the rehearsals; and announces the budget statement of the year of 1875.<br /> <p><p><br /> The Richard Wagner-Theater or the Bayreuth Festspielhaus Wagner’s opera house’s was built between 1872 and 1876. The funding of the construction was difficult thus Wagner gave concerts sold shares and set up Wagner Societies all over the world to promote his music and ideas and the Verwaltungs-Rathes des Richard Wagner-Theaters was in charge to manage all these actions. The open rehearsals announced in this Report were also part of the effort to finalize the building and fund its later operation. The Festspielhaus eventually opened in the summer of 1876 with the public premier of the four-opera cycle the Ring.<br /> <p><p><br /> Extremely scarce document.
