Creasing and edgewear along upper edge of DJ.; In the first two centuries AD the eastern Roman provinces experienced a proliferation of elite public generosity unmatched in their previous or later history. In this study Arjan Zuiderhoek attempts to answer the question why this should have been so. Focusing on Roman Asia Minor he argues that the surge in elite public giving was not caused by the weak economic and financial position of the provincial cities as has often been maintained but by social and political developments and tensions within the Greek cities created by their integration into the Roman imperial system. As disparities of wealth and power within imperial polis society continued to widen the exchange of gifts for honours between elite and non-elite citizens proved an excellent political mechanism for deflecting social tensions away from open conflicts towards communal celebrations of shared citizenship and the legitimation of power in the cities.; Greek Culture In The Roman World; 9.1 X 6.0 X 0.7 inches; 206 pages . 0521519306 . 20086639Archaeopress. 2008. Softcover. Fine. British Archaeological Reports B. A. R. British Series 459; 118 pages; The purpose of this book is to put the achievements of Agricolas navy apparently understated by Tacitus in their true perspective with the proposition that the Roman fleet reached the furthest limit of the known world Thule or Mainland Shetland where it located a convenient anchorage possibly in Lerwick harbour. To support this theory firstly the identification of Thule as Shetland during the classical period from the time of Pytheas onwards is investigated through collation of geographical sources secondly the earliest manuscript of Tacitus Agricola comes under closer scrutiny at the relevant points than ever before and finally contemporary literature is reassessed to determine the significance of Caledonia and Thule in the Flavian propaganda machine and to suggest the first Roman presence in the Shetland Islands. . 1407302744 . 20106706Franz Steiner Verlag. 2010. Softcover. Near Fine. Very light rubbing else Fine.; Heidelberger Althistorische Beitrage Und Epigraphische Studien Band 47; 47; 283 pages; English summary: Human perception includes the division of space into left and right. In general left holds a negative connotation: A clumsy man appears linkisch in German links meaning left and the term translates as awkward. If you conned him he has been gelinkt. For a long time this negative coloring was also closely associated with the image of left-handers: Left-handers were often regarded as disabled appeared awkward and antisocial and were exposed to discrimination. To understand the people of ancient Greece and Rome one must understand the role right and left played in their perception and evaluation of the world. Henning Wirth studies the following questions from an ancient historical perspective: How did the Greeks and Romans perceive left What role was provided to the left hand in a dominantly right-handed world where the right hand attested Godly effectiveness And how does one explain the phenomenon of left-handedness and assessment of left-handed people German text. 1966. Hardcover. Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Ex-library copy with one single institution stamp to title-page and pocket with discard stamp to endpage. Minor fading to spine.; 208 pages; During the last two centuries of the Roman Republic emigration from Italy to the provinces was widespread and increasing. This book is the first to survey the movement throughout the Empire; the emphasis is on private rather than state-organised settlement. The first part is about the Western Mediterranean provinces whose Romanization began in this period; the second part treats emigration to the Greek East where by contrast the settlers tended to become more and more hellenized. The principal matters considered are the volume of emigration the kinds of communities formed overseas by the emigrants their motives and origins the regions and places settled the fortunes of the settlers in the upheavals of the late Republican period and their relations with the people among whom they lived. . 0719000629 .
