200636256The University of North Carolina Press. 2006. Hardcover. Very Good- in Very Good dust jacket. Some pencilling. 1 page corner creased. A few pages have small stain to edges. Minor edgewear to DJ.; Expanding the discussion of religious participation of women in ancient Rome Celia E. Schultz demonstrates that in addition to observances of marriage fertility and childbirth there were more--and more important--religious opportunities available to Roman women than are commonly considered. Based on research in ancient literature inscriptions and archaeological remains from the fifth to the first century B. C. E. Schultz's study shows that women honored gods unaffiliated with domestic matters including Hercules and Jupiter; they took part in commercial military and political rites; they often worshipped alongside men; and they were not confined to the private sphere the traditional domain of women. The Vestal Virgins did not stand alone but were instead the most prominent members of a group of women who held high-profile religious positions: priestesses of Ceres Liber and Venus; the flaminica Dialis and the regina sacrorum; other cult officials; and aristocratic matrons who often took leading roles in religious observances even though they were not priestesses. Schultz argues that women were vital participants--both professional and nonprofessional--in the religion of the Roman Republic and that social and marital status in addition to gender were important factors in determining their opportunities for religious participation in the public sphere.; Studies in the History of Greece and Rome; 248 pages . 0807830186 . Very light shelfwear else fine.; Institute of Classical Studies Bulletin Supplement 97; 193 pages; The new millennium sees both Pliny the Elder and his massive encyclopaedic Natural History being studied more seriously and holistically than at any time in the preceding century. The essays in this volume which honour the seminal work of Barbara Levick on the politics and society of imperial Rome above all in the period of Pliny’s life and literary activity further this re-assessment. They consider aspects of Pliny’s life and output which have not so far received serious attention. These include his value as a source for the kings of Rome and their achievements; his attitude to astronomy and natural wonders to gentilician commemoration philosophical sects Roman dress and coinage; and his moral judgements on the fall of the Republic. The essays consider the ideological climate of the Flavian period as reflected not only in Pliny’s attitude to the past but in his construction of Rome and Italy and his relationship to contemporary writers like Licinius Mucianus. Pliny emerges clearly as a major literary and cultural figure of the early Empire. . 1905670141 . Institute of Classical Studies paperback
