A lost genius in the Sao Paulo hinterland he was an excellent draftsman and painter and invented photography in an independent isolated manner in 1833. According to his diary the idea of printing by light came to him on August 15 1832 he was familiar with the camera obscura. His experiments are noted in 5 handwritten diaries. Judging from the list of artists and their works available this catalogue seems to be from 1937 although there is no date specified within the catalogue itself.
