16169Writing the first modern field guide to birds Florence Merriam Bailey was an American ornithologist who committed her published works to educating the public about the importance of preserving natural habitats and endangered species. Signed Book "Birds of New Mexico" considered her most substantial work. Containing over 200 plates and illustrations of wildlife Bailey writes that "Birds" provides a "systematic survey" and is based in "published records of early surveys printed reports and notes migration notes.unpublished records of the Bureau of Biological Survey" and her own field work. Bailey's research on birds shifted emphasis in the field away from examining dead specimens and toward studying living birds in their natural habitats. As the first female member of the American Ornithologists' Union she was credited with encouraging the preservation of habitats and the protection of rare species. unknown books

She was considered to be one of the most literary ornithologists of her time. Written with the amateur in mind these books encouraged the study and observation of birds in their natural environments and based their science in ecology. Birds of New Mexico is considered to be Bailey's magnum opus and was completed at the request of the U. S. Biological Survey. Bailey was the first woman to be awarded a Brewster Medal by the American Ornithologists' Union in 1931 and was given an honorary doctorate by the University of New Mexico "in recognition of the educational and scientific value of her work on Birds of New Mexico."</p><p>Containing color illustrations by Allan Brooks 1869-1946 a Canadian ornithologist and artist known for his impressionistic paintings of birds that focused on the environments of the subject over detailed plumage. Brooks is also interesting for his service as a sniper during World War 1. <br /><br />Plates and text figure illustrations were done by Louis Agassiz Fuertes 1874-1927 an American ornithologist and the most prolific and influential bird artist in the United States after John James Audubon. Fuertes died shortly before publication of Birds of New Mexico. The work of Brooks and Fuertes on Birds of New Mexico is often overlooked in both men's biographies.</p> NM Dept. of Game and Fish / Press of Judd & Detweiler, Inc. hardcover
