All edges gilt; marbled endpapers; red silk place-marker. Errata slip bound-in at p. 1. An unusual fine binding of morocco and vellum combined. From the library of Hugh Cecil Earl of Lonsdale with his large armorial bookplate to front paste-down and ownership inscription of "W.P." to half-title dated 1904. A little very light scattered foxing otherwise contents clean. Collection of verse by Adela Florence Nicolson Cory 1865- 1904 under her pseudonym of Laurence Hope. Best known for her poems with themes of love and loss Cory's first collection "The Garden of Kama" was published in America as "India's Love Lyrics". The binding is stamped by Bumpus of Oxford Street but a loosely inserted printed note states that Bumpus sent their binding work to other firms such as Riviere so this may well be a Riviere binding. Hugh Cecil Lowther 5th Earl of Lonsdale 1857-1944 is best known for his interest in sports; he donated the original Lonsdale Belts for boxing and took a keen interest in the turf and the hunting field. From 1929 he became joint editor of the Lonsdale Library of sporting books and he founded and was first president of the Automobile Association. The book and its contents are in generally clean bright condition. There is some light rubbing and bumping to the spine ends and corners. The text pages are clean and bright. The foredges of the text block are uncut. The dust jacket has edge wear rubbing foxing ground-in dirt several edge tears nicks and a couple of snags to the rear spine joint. "In 1901 she published Garden of Kama which was published a year later in America under the title India's Love Lyrics. She attempted to pass these off as translations of various poets but this claim soon fell under suspicion. Her poems often used imagery and symbols from the poets of the North-West Frontier of India and the Sufi poets of Persia. She was among the most popular romantic poets of the Edwardian era. Her poems are typically about unrequited love and loss and often the death that followed such an unhappy state of affairs. Many of them have an air of autobiography or confession. " from Wikipedia . Scarce in jacket. <br /> <br /> Florence "Frankie" Victoria Adams was a social worker educator author and community activist who spent most of her career with the Atlanta School of Social Work now the Whitney M. Young Jr. School of Social Work at Clark Atlanta University. She authored two books the second about her work at CAU which was published posthumously. Adams was also heavily involved with the YWCA and thanks them in Soulcraft's acknowledgements for the "encouragement to present this material in a more general way."<br /> <br /> This copy is inscribed "To Mary Kate Duskin One of my favorite Soulcrafters with love Frankie V. Adams June 1959". Duskin was the longtime executive secretary of the Atlanta YWCA and a friend of Adams. Laid in are four programs from Adams's memorial service in 1979 a tri-fold brochure for Talk Two: Storge-Part II from C.S Lewis's A Series of Ten Radio Talks on Love 1959 The Episcopal Radio-TV Foundation Atlanta a Christmas card from Missionhurst Mission in Zaire signed "With love Frankie" a pamphlet with Dr. Joel Nederhood's sermon The Best Friendship inscribed to Duskin from Adams and a typed testimony titled "My Christianity" which Adams says she prepared for her Sunday school class and signed.
