Maestro e alfiere della musica, direttore intransigente e guida visionaria capace di ammaliare le platee di tutto il mondo: Arturo Toscanini, il più influente direttore d'orchestra del XX secolo, ha incarnato con la propria vita e la propria carriera il genio incandescente del panorama musicale globale. Dal Teatro alla Scala di Milano al Metropolitan di New York, ha diretto le prime mondiali di opere come "Pagliacci", "La bohème" e "Turandot", e prime italiane di Wagner, e Cajkovskij e Debussy, e ha collaborato con voci indimenticabili, da Enrico Caruso a Renata Tebaldi. Sempre guidato dalla convinzione che la musica non fosse qualcosa di «immobile», ma che esigesse una visione forte, assoluta, in grado di permeare ogni piega del proprio tempo, per farsi di quest'ultimo non un riflesso ma uno strumento di resistenza e avanguardia. "Toscanini" di Harvey Sachs è una lente che mette a fuoco i lati più intimi della sua vita. Ne affiora una generosità sconfinata, un amore critico ma puro per l'umanità, un temperamento esplosivo e illuminato dal coraggio. Sempre disposto ad aiutare gli amici e chiunque avesse bisogno anche a costo di rinunce personali, Toscanini fu in prima linea contro il fascismo e l'incalzare dei sentimenti nazionalisti, come quando nel 1931 venne picchiato perché si rifiutò di eseguire a Bologna l'inno fascista "Giovinezza" oppure quando volle inaugurare, viaggiando a proprie spese, un'orchestra di musicisti ebrei fuggiti in Palestina a metà degli anni Trenta. Pagine di vita scovate e raccolte da Harvey Sachs in quest'opera monumentale in cui si riversano gli archivi della famiglia Toscanini, tra lettere, fotografie inedite e documenti per molto tempo rimasti inaccessibili. Vi si scoprono le letture amate, tra le quali trovano posto Byron e Leopardi, Shelley e Dante, Shakespeare e Carducci, e si animano gli abbracci fraterni con Debussy a Parigi, i battibecchi con Richard Strauss, aneddoti dell'amicizia con Puccini, l'amore radicale e irrequieto per la propria famiglia. "Toscanini" narra una storia in cui la vita privata e la celebrità internazionale del grande direttore si confondono fino a smarrire le linee di demarcazione, e la verità dell'uomo si rivela profondamente più interessante della leggenda consegnata ai posteri.
