Originally erected before the American Revolutionary War this stately building had been re-designed in a neo-classical style by Pierre Charles L'Enfant for the occasion of George Washington's inauguration as the first President of the United States on 30 April 1789 which took place on its iron grillwork balcony. In this view the steeple of St. Paul's is visible above the rooftops at left; and the tip of the cupola of the First Presbyterian Church peeks over the gable of a tall house. Only three people are depicted: a man pushing a cart at lower left a man on the sidewalk in the left middleground and a third man on the steps of Federal Hall. This popular print after a 1797 watercolor by John Joseph Holland was made by Charles Currier. His older brother Nathaniel Currier established a successful New York-based lithography firm in 1835 which produced thousands of prints in various sizes that together create a vivid panorama of mid-to-late nineteenth century American life and its history." - Metropolitan Museum of Art 68.724.51. Sydney Smith 1771-1845 was a cleric orator and writer and a co-founder of the influential magazine of the Scottish Enlightenment the "Edinburgh Review" 1755-1756. This publication included a review by Adam Smith on Rousseau's "Discourse on Inequality" in which private property is shown to be the original source and basis of all inequality. Sydney Smith was a regular visitor at the famous salons held at Holland House in London where Lord & Lady Holland hosted political and literary gatherings whose attendees included the Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott and the Irish playwright Richard Sheridan. Some quotations from Smith: "All lives lived out of London are mistakes" "No furniture is so charming as books." and "Poverty is no disgrace to a man but it is confoundedly inconvenient.".The memoir was written by Smith's eldest daughter Lady Saba Holland 1802-1866. Bei dem Jubiläum in Oxford 1856 erhielt er den Ehrentitel als Dr. jur. civil. Ausser einer Anzahl von Aufsätzen in den Quarterly und Edinburgh Reviews veröffentlichte er 1839: "Medical notes and reflexions" enthaltend 35 Essays über die Philosophie und Praxis der Medicin die mit Schärfe und Gedankenreichthum verfasst sind und von denen einige zusammen mit noch mehreren anderen später noch einmal u. d. T. : "Chapters on mental physiology" 1852 publicirt wurden. Er gab auch noch eine Auswahl seiner "Essays on scientific and other subjects contributed to the Edinburgh and Quarterly Reviews" heraus jedoch wurde von allen seinen Productionen gesagt dass wie seine Praxis mehr eine aristokratische als ausgedehnte war so seine Schriften mehr den Charakter eines kritischen Dilettantismus als solider Kenntnisse zeigten und seine Beiträge zur medicinischen Literatur mehr speculative Essays waren als auf sorgfältiger und eingehender Forschung beruhten. Während seiner mehr als 50jährigen Praxis in London brachte er bis an sein Lebensende fast ausnahmelos zwei Herbstmonate auf Reisen zu unter denen acht nach den Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika und Canada eine nach Jamaika und West-Indien drei nach Russland zwei nach Island u.s.w. stattgefunden hatten. Von diesen Reisen gab er in seiner einzig in ihrer Art dastehenden Autobiographie seiner letzten Publication den "Recollections of past life" 1872 die ein sehr unterhaltendes Buch sind ein höchst interessantes Bild. Nach dem an seinem 86. Geburtstage 27. October 1873 erfolgten Tode wurde von seinem Sohne dem Rev. Francis J. Bound without endpapers.Sixteen pages of adverts to the rear.An early work by physician and travel writer Sir Henry Holland looking at the nature of agriculture in his home county Cheshire. Before beginning his medical studies in Edinburgh Holland was employed by the Board of Agriculture upon the suggestion of Sir John Stanley to report on the agriculture of Cheshire. This work provides a detailed study on agriculture in the county at the beginning of the nineteenth century with proposals on how to improve its state. Holland was a cousin of Elizabeth Gaskell and his great-uncle was Josiah Wedgwood. Later in life Holland gained fame for his travel writing. At a party hosted by relatives in 1836 he read pages of Darwin's journal he sent from his Beagle voyage. In a quarter cloth binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart. Paper remnants to the head of the joints. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine heavier to the extremities with a little loss of paper. Minor rubbing to the boards. Front hinge is a little strained but remains firm. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Small closed tear to the folding map to the frontispiece. 189068061890. One 8 x 11 inch sheet. Offered here is an unusual scrapbook specimen likely assembled by F. Holland Day coming together with Day collection relating to John Keats: two leaf specimens mounted with captions in ink script: 1 “Leaf of the Mulberry Tree Wentworth Place Hampstead†and 2 “Leaves from the grave of Keats.†In 1818 after the tragic loss of his younger brother to tuberculosis Keats moved into what was then called Wentworth Place in Hampstead London with his friend Charles Brown the tree is still there for visitors to see. The Mulberry tree believed to date from the 17th century was situated just outside the window from where Keats wrote in the grounds of Keats House which he alluded to in a July 1818 letter to his friend John Hamilton Reynolds. He stayed there for 17 months before leaving for Italy where he died in Rome aged twenty-five on February 23rd 1821 and is buried at the Cemitero Acattolicoóthe a Protestant Cemetery in Rome. One of the three examples is not present apparently another leaf from Keats’ grave has been lost and interestingly the glue used bears some of the veins of the leaf. “A fascinating and colorful figure and an extraordinary artist F. He assembled one of the largest collections in the world of materials relating to the life and work of John Keats and in 1894 traveled to England to dedicate the first ever memorial to the poet. The audience for the dedication ceremony included Oscar Wilde Aubrey Beardsley George Moore and William Butler Yeats. But it is for his photography that Day is best known. His stunningly original brilliantly executed and sometimes controversial photographic images of blacks children and allegorical subjects brought him fame.
