Collated complete. An early work by physician and travel writer Sir Henry Holland looking at the nature of agriculture in his home county Cheshire. Before beginning his medical studies in Edinburgh Holland was employed by the Board of Agriculture upon the suggestion of Sir John Stanley to report on the agriculture of Cheshire.Holland was a cousin of Elizabeth Gaskell and his great-uncle was Josiah Wedgwood. Later in life Holland gained fame for his travel writing. At a party hosted by relatives in 1836 he read pages of Darwin's journal he sent from his Beagle voyage.This work provides a detailed study on agriculture in the county at the beginning of the nineteenth century with proposals on how to improve its state. In March 1878 Mr Holland set out into the desert with three Arabs and three camels and travelled 1000 miles on foot within 53 days. This portfolio of photographs documents the fresco cycle showing the Song of the Nibelungen painted by the Nazarene artist Julius Schnorr von Karolsfeld 1794-1841 for the Residenz of the Bavarian Royal Palace in Munich. According to the Royal Palace's web site these wall and ceiling frescoes which survive were "the first monumental representations" of the saga. Albert was royal photographer to the court and family of Ludwig II of Bavaria and later the inventor of the albertype a collotype process.<br /> <br /> Twenty sepia photographs mounted on yellow backgrounds which are printed on heavy cream stock. Albert's name and the royal crest are embossed beneath each image. Page size is ca. 10 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches; backgrounds are ca. 8 1/4 x 10 inches; photographs vary in size from ca. 3 x 5 inches to ca. 6 1/2 x 7 inches. Housed in boards covered with red cloth blind embossed and gilt stamped. The plates are preceded by 16 pages of printed matter: title page H. Holland's text on the saga and the illustrated scenes and the list of plates. James Wyld Senior 1790-1836 was a distinguished British mapmaker known for producing maps and globes. He served as Geographer to George IV and William IV. Map shows some offsetting. Printed in Springfield by Gurdon Bill the volume contains four engraved plates including a tissue-guarded frontispiece. Bound in 19th-century half calf over marbled boards with raised bands and gilt spine titling. Matching marbled endpapers and page edges are intact. The contents are generally clean with foxing primarily along the plate margins. The binding is complete and stable with minor wear to edges and corners. This edition is referenced in Sabin 32512 though it is not recorded in Howes. A complete example relevant to collectors focused on Lincoln or post-Civil War publications.
