A brutal Depression painting a bum's-eye view of the hog carcasses live swine and the boots and slopbroom of a butcher seen in the alleyway behind a San Francisco butchershop. Painted in luminous sea greens and whites from the perspective of a laid- out drunk this intense examination of life among the lowly possesses an unlikely grandeur. Harder edged than Daumier's great and tragic pictures of the Parisian underbelly more desperate than any of Sloan's ashcan scenes down-and-out artist John Holland's "Butchershop Alley" is an uncensored depiction of what the promised land looked like to a man who was knocked out at the end of its road. <br> <br> According to an artist file at the San Francisco Museum of Art John Holland was born in Kilkenny Ireland in 1882. The date of his arrival in San Francisco is unknown. An informational form found in the file listed his full time occupation as perhaps sardonically "gallery attendant." His WPA work includes watercolor paintings for Bay region schools and Letterman Hospital the United States Army's first permanent general hospital founded in 1899 and completed in 1935. He died in Golden Gate Park circa 1935. The police identified Holland's body from a receipt found in his pocket for two paintings lent to a San Francisco Museum of Art exhibition. <br> <br> Provenance: Private Collection New Haven Ct. 1920008950New York 1920. Unbound. Very good. This one-page letter on the stationery of the New York State Bridge and Tunnel Commission and New Jersey Interstate Tunnel Commission measuring 8" x 8.5" was written to Mr. Leon C. Hills of Washington DC on October 17 1920. The lot also includes a newspaper clipping annotated Sunday Feb 26 22 about the tunnel titled "Hudson River Tunnel Means Jobs for Many." The letter and clipping are in nice shape; lightly toned. <br /><br />Holland's letter is apparently in response to a newspaper article not the clipping in this lot in a Washington newspaper announcing that funds had been appropriated to build the tunnel. It reads in part: "We are now engaged in a big undertaking which is occupying every minute of my time but it is very interesting and a great pleasure. . . .". <br /><br />In 1920 funding was approved for what was then known as the "Hudson River Vehicular Tunnel Project" and in 1922 construction began in New York at the corner of Canal and West Streets. Holland the tunnel's designer and chief engineer died on October 27 1924 the day before the tunnel was completed. Doctors attributed his heart attack to the stress of overseeing the tunnel's construction. The tunnel was named in Holland's honor two weeks later on November 12 1924. <br /><br /> books

Hardcover. lightly worn copy with some faint staining to the front cover short closed tear at bottom of title page; jacket edgeworn a few small tears some minor paper loss at both ends of spine all text on spine still present internally tape-repaired with modern tape at least at front foldover. Very scarce novel which served as the basis for one of the best of Otto Preminger's early films and a worthy follow-up to his classic LAURA. The first of five novels by this author who apparently also dabbled in screenwriting without any notable success. The only other film credit I've been able to uncover for her was a story credit for the 1950 noir THE FILE ON THELMA JORDON. Interestingly the front jacket flap bears a boxed notice to "WATCH FOR THE MOVIE" indicating that the book was "snapped up hot off the typewriter by Twentieth Century-Fox." Dana Andrews was already announced as the star of the forthcoming film version in late September 1944 about seven months before the book hit the shelves with the finished film finally going into release in December. Andrews' co-stars were Linda Darnell sexy girl and Alice Faye nice girl the latter making a sort of "comeback" as well as a change of pace in a non-musical role after being absent from the screen for nearly two years. Ironically however it ended up being Faye's swan song as a major star after she got into a dispute with studio head Darryl Zanuck over his decision to cut down her role in the picture in favor of Darnell's. . Danton meets his fate before a revolutionary tribunal and is eventually sent to the guillotine.
