First edition of an extremely important and powerful Dutch emblem book. Landwehr 395; Veeghen/Kellen 684. Jan Luyken (also called Johannes Luiken / Luycken / or Luykens) was an Amsterdam born artist, engraver, and poet. He was a very important and versatile etcher in the period after Rembrandt. He was baptized in the Lamist Mennonite Church in 1673, and by 1675 he fell under the sway of the mystical fire surrounding the followers of Jacob Boehme. Closely attached to a few kindred spirits (including his son, Caspar), he lived in seclusion and worked on his etchings and poems. His artistry is distinguished by its clarity, detail, and power. This is among the most famous of his works. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! NW16 RtStk
