12388Portrait of Mrs. Holleman - Van Hoven.Photographer: Offenberg Amsterdam and C.F. Literatuur: H.A.M. Snelders 'Holleman Arnold Frederik 1859-1953' in <em>Biografisch woordenboek van Nederland deel 2</em> Amsterdam 1985 241; J.P. Description: "This book the catalogue of the first retrospective of the work of the French Neoimpressionist artist Paul Signac to be held in nearly forty years accompanies the 2001 exhibition organised by the Reunion des Musees Nationaux/Musee d'Orsay Paris the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam and The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. This long overdue tribute to Signac's power of expression and artistic influence features some two hundred paintings drawings watercolours and prints from public and private collections worldwide. Fully illustrated in colour and discussed in individual entries these works offer an unprecedented overview of Signac's fifty-year career. Signac's artistic development began with the luminous plein air paintings he made in the early 1880s which reveal the lessons he absorbed from Monet Guillaumin and other leading Impressionists. From 1884 until 1891 Signac's close association with Georges Seurat encouraged his explorations of colour harmony contrasts and Neoimpressionist technique. In the scintillating works of his maturity the rigours of Pointillism gave way to richly patterned decorative colour surfaces. In a series of essays the exhibition's curators discuss Signac's richly interesting career from a variety of perspectives. John Leighton Director of the Van Gogh Museum provides an introductory essay that chronicles Signac's triumphs as a painter. The well-known Signac scholar Marina Ferretti Bocquillon focuses on Signac's achievements as a draftsman and watercolourist and Sjraar van Heugten Chief Curator of the Van Gogh Museum summarises Signac's activity as a printmaker. Anne Distel Chief Curator of the Musee d'Orsay examines Signac's role as a promoter of his own works and those of his colleagues and describes a host of other activities - beyond painting - that engaged Signac's interest. The final essays in this volume shed new light on Signac's appreciation of the works of his predecessors contemporaries and followers - as evidenced in his artworks in his published and unpublished writings and in his private collection. Susan Alyson Stein Associate Curator of European Paintings The Metropolitan Museum of Art examines the ways Signac understood the genius of such painters as Delacroix Monet Renoir Cezanne Van Gogh Bonnard and Matisse. Marina Ferretti Bocquillon explores the Signac's role as a collector providing a wealth of new information about the works he owned by fellow artists. Contributor Kathryn Calley Galitz is Research Associate in the Department of European Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. Lavishly illustrated with comparative and documentary photographs the volume includes an annotated chronology and a map that pinpoints the sites depicted in Signac's works." -- with a bonus offer-- . 1860ABC_50131Amsterdam: printed by R. de Vries for François Buffa & Sons 1860. Original brown blind-stamped wave-grained cloth with the title and imprint information lettered in gold on the front board in a rococo frame yellow endpapers. Oblong ca.16.4 x 24.6 cm. per leaf. The panorama is made up of 8 numbered lithographed views printed in monochrome with beige tone block. The viewer looks southward from the IJ over the city from the Oosterdok eastern dock and the Oosterkerk eastern church along the docks and wharfs via the recognisable towers of several churches and the view of the Royal Palace to the Westerdok western dock a large factory and the Blauwhoofd the northwestern-most bulwark of the city. Extremely rare leporello-style bound copy of a lithographic panorama of Amsterdam printed in monochrome with a beige tone block after drawings by Johan Conrad Greive 1837-1891 and lithographed by Ruurt de Vries Jr. 1813-1874.A remarkably precise and atmospheric profile of Amsterdams IJ waterfront extending from the Lijnbanen to beyond the Blaauwhoofd. The principal buildings are identified beneath each plate. The panorama captures in extraordinary detail the eastern docks the Oosterdok and Westerdok areas and numerous landmarks including the Zeemagazijn Admiraliteitsmagazijn Oosterkerk Zuiderkerk Oude Kerk the Dam with the Royal Palace and Nieuwe Kerk Westerkerk Noorderkerk and the bustling shipping of the IJ. A distant suggestion of Haarlems St Bavos Church may be discerned on the horizon.Greives meticulous urban draughtsmanship is akin to painting with the precision of photography. He later became chairman of Arti et Amicitiae and was celebrated for his highly detailed views of cities and rivers. The present example is preserved in a true leporello concertina binding: the front and back boards are not joined at the spine but are attached only to the first and last leaves of the accordion-folded sheets. This work is extremely rare: we have located only two other bound copies both held at the University of Groningen. Curiously of the related publication Panorama de Rotterdam likewise illustrated by J.C. Greive and published by François Buffa & Sons only a single surviving copy is recorded also at the University of Groningen. We have traced another copy of the Rotterdam panorama at the House of European History. The work has been cut slightly short touching the plate numbering and is slightly foxed throughout. Otherwise in very good condition.l d'Ailly Repertorium 278; Rijksmuseum object no. 110681Rare pamphlet on the power struggle between Willem II and Amsterdam. Original laid paper in good condition<em>. Knuttel 6781a. Decorated marbled paper binding. Quarto edition in -4.
