Quarto 10 1/4" tall 357 pages 45 plates complete-43 listed plus 2 three-quarter leather over marbled boards. A good copy overall generally clean but shelf worn hinges cracked front cover loosening at the hinge fore-corner tips worn through to boards marbling faded worn and stained; internal binding tight paper just lightly yellowed with a damp stain to the bottom margins of the frontmatter not affecting text or illustration. Engraved plates bright. The condition of this volume is well worth the cost of restoration. J. and J. Boydell; London hardcover

ESTC citation number T79991.Illustrated with a frontispiece one map thirty-one plates and in-text engravings.Collated complete.An interesting topographical work on the River Avon focusing on its running through the county of Warwickshire where the river becomes commonly known as 'Shakespeare's Avon'. Providing an insightful look at the Avon's run in Warwickshire and its surrounding public buildings. The author Samuel Ireland was a fervent admirer of Shakespeare his admiration shining cleary in this detailed topographical work. Despite his work as an author and engraver Samuel Ireland is best remembered today for being the chief victim of the Ireland Shakespeare forgeries a series of forged letters that his son William Henry Ireland purported to be by Shakespeare. In fact in for preparing for this work Samuel took his son to Stratford-Upon-Avon to admire the sights. This trip took place in 1793 with William's forgeries appearing late in 1794. In a rebacked calf binding. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the boards. Bumping to the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some occasional spots a little heavier to the plates. Tissue guards are worn with loss to some. Plate facing page 250 is detaching. Very Good R. He also wrote many more 'river' views on the Thames the Medway and the Wye. This work describes the locations and views along the River Avon from its source at Naseby to its junction with the Severn at Twekesbury. A bright copy of this work with good margins. In a full calf binding. Externally very smart with rubbing to the joints and extremities. Small loss to the leather at the head of front joint. Internally firmly bound. An uncommon and interesting biographical work. An important memoir of one of the best actors of the eighteenth century. During his career as an actor he performed as part of the Old Orchard Street Theatre in Bath. In paper wraps. Externally rubbed. There is some wear to the extremities including some marks to the boards and spine.Chipping to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities resulting in a small amount of loss. Front hinge has failed with rear board and spine only held by the rear hinge. Internally the binding is loosening in places with the chords exposed. Pages are generally clean and bright apart from some occasional mild spots and handling marks. There are also some mild stains to the bottom of some pages. Lacks half title page. Good J. A charming seaside view by Samuel Ireland the engraver and collector connected with the infamous Shakespeare forgeries.<br/> <br/> Ireland was a minor engraver and publisher who worked in London at the close of the eighteenth century. He was an avid art and manuscript collector and many of the works that he engraved and published were after pieces found in his own collection. This romantic view is after a painting by DeVlieger which was in Ireland's collection at the time. This image operates as both an example of the picturesque tradition in eighteenth century landscape prints and as an advertisement and promotion of Ireland's celebrated collection. With this image Ireland presents himself as both a serious engraver and a respected collector. Unfortunately today Ireland is better remembered for his involvement in the Shakespeare forgeries than for his evocative prints. Over a period of many years Ireland's son William Henry sold his father a series of forged manuscripts which he claimed to be written in Shakespeare's hand. Ireland who willingly trusted his son added these forgeries to his collection and presented them in an exhibition to the literary community who accepted them as genuine. The charade progressed so far that an invented play entitled 'Vortigern' which William Henry had written and presented as a missing work by Shakespeare was performed at Sheridan's Drury Lane theatre by some of the leading actors of the age. When the hoax was eventually discovered Ireland's reputation was ruined and his son was disgraced. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household.
