Also extra-illustrated with 23 hand-colored engraved plates 21 of which depict scenes from the play and are after J. M. Moreau and two portraits one of Joan of Arc the other of Voltaire. There are also 25 b/w engravings these proofs of plates done by Duplessis-Bertaux. Bound beautifully by R. Wallis for Robson & Co. a rare bookseller at the turn-of-the-twentieth century stated in full straight-grained morocco with five raised bands and gilt spine decoration gilt turn-ins and gilt edges. And plates are all printed on a luxuriant and thick vellum paper. 8vo. 22 by 16 cm. 406 pp. Pagination continuous between two volumes. Some of the Moreau plates are dated 1788 or 1789. We can assume all of the Moreau plates are from that time. They were created for an earlier French edition of the poem and most of them have two line captions quoting the poem. The Condition: Light rubbing evident on raised bands and spine extremities. Otherwise binding fresh tight. Overall a fine copy. The Lutetian Society unknown

Hairline cracks to the leather joints but the boards are firmly attached sewing strong corners are rubbed with some little chipping to the board edges. Book label of an early perhaps contemporary owner to the front pastedown sadly rubbed out leaving the bordered edges. Complete. Illustrated with two plates: frontispiece of the Quintain Seal and plate of Shakespeare signatures. 7 317 pp 17 index. A good untrimmed copy in plain boards. # 503 Freeman Bibliotheca Fictiva. The young William Henry Ireland 1775-1835 son of a Shakespeare-adoring antiquary committed a series of deceptions forging documents and so forth which he passed off as long-lost Shakespeare originals. His spurious lost-Shakespeare-play 'Vortigern and Rowena' made it to a disastrous first night in 1796. The Confessions on offer here is a first edition of the culmination of the controversy. A scarce early edition. Eight volumes in total consisting of Volumes II-IX. Bound in handsome half calf with gilt detail to the spines. The bindings of volumes II to VIII are uniform with the final two volumes very similar but with different patterned boards and darker leather. Each issue of the Christian Examiner and Church of Ireland Magazine over four years from January 1826 until December 1829 bound together in book format. The Christian Examiner was established for the purpose of advocating the cause of the Established Church and to promote Protestantism over Roman Catholicism. This work gives a fascinating account of the Church of Ireland community in the early aftermath of the Act of Union 1800 a monumental period in Irish history. The Church of Ireland is the second largest Christian church in Ireland. Written by members of the Church of Ireland. Bound in half calf. Externally very smart with some rubbing and shelf wear to the edges. Spines are darkened for volumes VIII and IX. Small amount of loss to the rear board of volume IX. Light marks to the boards. Small crack to the upper rear joint of volume VI. Cracks to the lower joints of volume VII. Spotting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Front hinge of volume VI starting but still very firm. Quarto publisher's original Irish green cloth the spines gilt decorated with gilt lettering and elaborate pictorial Irish motifs the covers with all over designs stamped in blind and with a central gilt pictorial ornament surrounded by vines and flowers gilt all edges gilt one of the most preferred of the bindings used by the publisher's to present this fine work. vi 1794 ads.; iv 186 pp. A really pleasing copy of this fine work both volumes beautifully preserved and in essentially fine condition the light wear or evidence of age comes primarily from shelving the plates and text-blocks are in fresh and clean condition with only very occasional evidence of the usual spotting to which the paper is prone. As usual the engraved titles with a bit more of the spotting. Generally a very clean and handsome set in unusually nice condition. AN ESPECIALLY BEAUTIFUL WORK FILLED WITH PICTURESQUE STEEL ENGRAVED SCENES OF IRELAND. William Bartlett traveled extensively throughout Europe and the East with his good friend Dr. Beattie and brought home over a thousand drawings. Eventually they were engraved and published into volumes with descriptive text. Here we find one of one of Bartlett's best works partly attributable to the magnificent scenery of the country described. Each engraving combines attention to detail subtle use of lighting and shade and romantic portrayal of the landscape. Scenes are rendered from virtually every corner of the country and include both natural and architectural compositions.<br> The text focuses heavily on the history of each locale but also includes local customs sights and first hand travel impressions. A somewhat elusive title in the Bartlett oeuvre these illustrations of Ireland are typical of his best and most famous work. George Virtue hardcover

According to penciled notes on the free front endpaper of Volume I this was the publisher's own copy with occasional annotations throughout by the author. There are also two letters tipped in from the author to the publisher at page 100 of Volume I. <br /> <br /> This is a monumental history of New York City theatre by Joseph Ireland 1817-1898. Joseph Norton Ireland one of the major early historians of the American theater entered his father's business after graduating from high school in his native New York. Leaving the company in 1855 and retiring to Bridgeport Connecticut Ireland devoted the rest of his life to studying and writing about the stage. His history is organized chronologically by theatre season and then by theatre. It compiles a prodigious amount of information about every performance at the major New York theatres its dates and its cast. He writes about how well the performances and the actors and actresses were received. In addition Ireland offers detailed personal and professional information about the performers and other important theatrical figures of the time. His comments are entertaining as well as enlightening. He also provides interesting details about the exterior and interior appearance of the important theatres of the time. Ireland's occasional annotations to the text in Morrell's copies appear to be to update information about various performers for later editions of the book. Many are about the deaths of actors that occurred after the book was published. Others offer a more detailed biography news of a marital separation or a date correction.<br /> <br /> Bound by Oldach & Co. in brown leather with spine with raised bands and gilt titling. Leather in corners and along spine is somewhat rubbed and scuffed particularly on Volume II. Because of the volumes' size the hinges are weak or partly cracked and have been reinforced with tape along the newer pastedowns and first free endpapers. Interior pages are clean and bright with slightest aging to margins. Overall in very good condition. Volume I: 663 pages; Volume II: 746 pages including index and list of subscribers. Contemporary calf double fillet borders to boards rebacked to style with gilt decoration and black morocco label lettered in gilt. Edges and corners rubbed with a little wear to the latter. All edges speckled. Internally near fine. A very nice copy of the first book published by Ireland following his exposure as a forger. Rare in commerce only two copies appearing at auction in the last fifty years. William Henry Ireland was a type familiar in the world of letters and books - the clever but rackety fantasist. He absorbed from his father a publisher a fascination with Shakespeare and perhaps more significantly the forgers Chatterton and Macpherson. A spell working for a lawyer gave him access to old documents which he studied and copied before taking the plunge and forging a deed containing Shakespeare's signature. His father thinking it real was thrilled. Ireland began to produce more "Shakespearian" documents claiming that they were from an anonymous collector. When even a letter from Shakespeare to Elizabeth I was authenticated by contemporary experts Ireland overreached himself and brought forth a "new" play Vortigern and Rowena. Ireland's doubters led by the Shakespearean scholar Edmond Malone began to circle and the first and only performance of the play was disrupted in part by its leading actor John Philip Kemble who repeated a line including the words "solemn mockery". Although the young Ireland immediately confessed both he and his father were disgraced the latter dying in 1800 and William being forced to eke out a thin living as a poet historian and satirist. Ballads in Imitation of the Antient was a clever attempt at redemption. It was published in Ireland's name so no-one could accuse him of forgery or fakery but the book played into the contemporary taste for bogus antiquarianism which floated somewhere between historical truth and historically inspired fiction.
