The Carlines were a well-known family of artists: George Carline 1855-1920 was a successful painter of landscapes and portraits while his son Richard Carline 1896-1980 was likewise a landscape artist - particularly known for his views from the air as a war artist during WWI - as well as his work as a convener and organiser across the art world. John Ireland c. 1742–1808 biographer. The son of a farmer he trained as a watchmaker and later established himself as a dealer in prints and writer for newspapers becoming a fixture in London literary and artistic circles and a friend of artists including Thomas Gainsborough and John Hamilton Mortimer: the frontis of vol. I is engraved after Mortimer's portrait of Ireland. Ireland was an inveterate collector and preserver of prints and drawings and it was this instinct that made him the ideal presenter of Hogarth's engravings in Hogarth Illustrated which presents Hogarth's plates - the rights to which had been transferred from Mary Lewis executrix of Hogarth's widow's will to the publisher Boydell - together with Ireland's commentary. Ireland notes in his preface that 'every plate has been carefully cleaned -and the rolling-presses now in use being on an improved principle the paper superior and the art of printing better understood impressions are more clearly and accurately taken off than they have been at any preceding period' p. cxv. Ireland's attention to detail extends to the colour of paper used - as a note in vol. III specifies 'As this print to heighten the burlesque was almost invariably impressed on blue paper I have stamped the annexed copy on the same colour' p. 18. Ireland's Supplement to Hogarth Illustrated vol. III an account of the artist 'based on Hogarth's manuscripts and autobiographical notes' ODNB was for many years the standard biography. Ralph Waldo Emerson: Recollections of His Visits to England 1882 presents a contemporary account of Ralph Waldo Emerson's engagements with British literary culture written by a close associate who facilitated his lecture tours and maintained long-term correspondence with him. Compiled immediately following Emerson's death the work draws on personal recollections and unpublished letters to document his visits to England in 1833 1847 to 1848 and 1872 to 1873 situating him within a network that included figures such as Thomas Carlyle William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The text supports research into American Transcendentalism transatlantic literary exchange and the personal and professional relationships that shaped nineteenth-century intellectual life.

Ireland Alexander.
