With a portrait frontispiece. A work of speculative natural history and philosophy originally published anonymously. It brought together various ideas of stellar evolution with the progressive transmutation of species in an accessible narrative which tied together numerous scientific theories of the age. The work was well received by Victorian society and became an international bestseller. However its unorthodox themes contradicted the natural theological theories of the time and were reviled by clergymen and by scientists. With an introduction by Anthony Ireland. In the original green cloth binding. Externally sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spine resulting in minor loss to the head.
