Abbey scenery 427 - As with many copies the added engraved title has a trimmed-away caption. Binding a bit worn but sturdy and handsome; book shows little foxing. Near Fine internally in a solid very good or better binding; see scans. Also for the collector of scarce old bookseller's pasted labels the front pastedown bears the small .5" x 1" label of: "Lapworth. Printer Binder Performer Newspaper Agent. Stratford. " Samuel Ireland an engraver collector and publisher who worked in London at the close of the eighteenth century and who was unfortunately and at least initially unwittingly connected with some rather infamous Shakespeare forgeries would doubtless prefer to be better remembered - and perhaps should be - for his series of visually evocative geographical offerings such as this one than for the scandal. Hutton wrote numerous books on salmon fishing and of particular relevance here given the book title are Wye Salmon and Other Fish; Rod-Fishing for Salmon on the Wye. Slight rubbing to spine. The first edition of Samuel Ireland's interesting topographical work on the Warwickshire Avon complete with detailed plates throughout. The first edition. ESTC citation number T79991.Illustrated with a frontispiece one map thirty-one plates and in-text engravings.Collated complete.An interesting topographical work on the River Avon focusing on its running through the county of Warwickshire where the river becomes commonly known as 'Shakespeare's Avon'. Providing an insightful look at the Avon's run in Warwickshire and its surrounding public buildings. The author Samuel Ireland was a fervent admirer of Shakespeare his admiration shining cleary in this detailed topographical work. Despite his work as an author and engraver Samuel Ireland is best remembered today for being the chief victim of the Ireland Shakespeare forgeries a series of forged letters that his son William Henry Ireland purported to be by Shakespeare. In fact in for preparing for this work Samuel took his son to Stratford-Upon-Avon to admire the sights. This trip took place in 1793 with William's forgeries appearing late in 1794. In a rebacked calf binding. Externally generally smart with rubbing to the boards. Bumping to the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some occasional spots a little heavier to the plates. Tissue guards are worn with loss to some. Plate facing page 250 is detaching. Very Good R. Good. 12.5 Cm x 19 .5 Cm. xii3331 errata; main text-block generally clean tight and unmarked the odd brown spot or slightly chipped edge being about the sum of its faults; front end-paper has early inscription 'Lord Chamberlains Office' across top and pencilled name 'Donne' to centre for no apparent reason both sides edge-tanned short closed nick bottom edge small early printed number label '23' top front pastedownrear gutter opening main problem however is that front cover virtually detached and retained by rather crude yellow adhesive paper tape strip down front gutter this can I think be removed for proper restoration purposes; covers clean but corner rubbed and edge-darkened panelled has spine ends chipped across below head binder small label present but all somewhat faded or rubbed gilt '23' to bottom. The short-lived Henderson was a briefly a prominent figure and admired actor and figure in the London theatre and book contains references to and correspondence with Garrick. There are actually rather few poems these usually being embedded in letters. Uncommon. As an irrelevant but curious aside I spotted in a footnote to Preface p.x in defence of publishing Henderson's poetry the inclusion of poems by 'black women' in a list of those whose verse should not pester the public. <br/> <br/> J.Johnson hardcover

An uncommon and interesting biographical work. An important memoir of one of the best actors of the eighteenth century. During his career as an actor he performed as part of the Old Orchard Street Theatre in Bath. In paper wraps. Externally rubbed. There is some wear to the extremities including some marks to the boards and spine.Chipping to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities resulting in a small amount of loss. Front hinge has failed with rear board and spine only held by the rear hinge. Internally the binding is loosening in places with the chords exposed. Pages are generally clean and bright apart from some occasional mild spots and handling marks. There are also some mild stains to the bottom of some pages. Lacks half title page. Good J. Johnson paperback
