Just the faintest hint of shelf wear one color plate with minor tear but still a fine and handsome copy--clean and fresh internally in a lustrous decorative binding.

This sumptuously illustrated publication celebrating Belgium and its King Albert I is offered here in a lovely contemporary binding. Assembled in the early days of the First World War this publication aimed to raise broader awareness and support for the plight of the Belgians at the hands of the Kaiser's armies as well as honoring the nation's bravery. Novelist Hall Cain 1853-1931 who edited the anthology wrote in the introduction that "Belgium has fought not only her own battle but also the battle of France the battle of Great Britain and the battle of Freedom. By her brave stand against incalculable odds she has added a new and inspiring chapter to the heroic annals of humanity and perhaps lifted to a higher level the future destinies of man." Following the 1914 British edition by only a few months our American printing includes a note that the publisher's proceeds are to be donated to the Belgian Fund. "King Albert's Book" includes text music and illustrations by nearly 240 contributors including religious leaders Aga Khan the Archbishop of Canterbury politicians William Howard Taft Winston Churchill authors Rudyard Kipling Baroness Orczy scientists Guglielmo Marconi Flinders Petrie composers Claude Debussy Camille Saint-Saëns and of course artists: the plates include works by Arthur Rackham Charles Dana Gibson Kay Nielsen Maxfield Parrish Edmund Dulac and others. Two of these plates by Rackham and Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow have been mounted as doublures in the present copy. The luxury binding though unsigned was evidently the work of a very skilled artisan. The quality of the finishing is excellent and the design is harmonious though sufficiently restrained to be respectful of the subject matter. Hearst's International Library Co unknown

1648ABC_49958Leiden: Bonaventura & Abraham Elzevier 1648. 18th-century gold-tooled calf sewn on 5 supports with the corresponding raised bands on the spine faint traces of a title on the spine a double fillet border on both boards remnants of gold-tooled board edges red-sprinkled edges. 4to. With Elzeviers woodcut device on the title page several decorated woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. Rare first and only edition printed entirely in modern Greek. The text records a largely overlooked episode in relations between the Orthodox Eastern Church and Calvinism in the mid-17th century: Kyrillos Lukaros 1572-1638 Metrophanes Kritopoulos ca. 1589-1639 and other Greek Church leaders sought to reform the Eastern Church by harmonising its doctrines with those of Calvinism. Central to this effort was the present work a modern Greek translation of the Dutch Reformed creed catechism liturgy and rules prepared by Hierotheus Abbot of Cephalonia ca. 1599-1664 who studied at Leiden and enjoyed the patronage of both the Leiden Theological Faculty and the Dutch States General.Abbatios arrived in Leiden in 1644 with a companion also a high-ranking Orthodox cleric. Their visit was designed both to strengthen earlier contacts with the Reformed Church and to study customs and beliefs in the Eastern Mediterranean. The States General subsidised their year-long stay so that they might familiarise themselves with Reformed doctrine but Abbatios remained longer to translate key Reformed texts into modern Greek. These translations appear not to have circulated widely in the Levant. Their main significance was that they led French Huguenots to mistakenly believe that the Greek Church as a whole rejected Transubstantiation. The text finely printed in three sizes of Greek type presents the Belgic Confession the Heidelberg Catechism and the Liturgy of the Fathers of Dordrecht. The Confession largely the work of Guido de Brès 1522-1567 had been adopted at various synods between 1571 and 1619 and reaffirmed at The Hague in 1651.The present copy comes from the library of Charles Townshend Lord Bayning 1728-1810 who was a British politician and diplomat. Known as Spanish Charles from his service as Secretary to the British Embassy in Madrid 1751-1756 he represented Great Yarmouth in the House of Commons 1756-1784 1790-1796 serving as Lord of the Admiralty 1765-1770 Lord of the Treasury 1770-1777 Joint Vice-Treasurer for Ireland 1777-1782 and Treasurer of the Navy 1783. Admitted to the Privy Council in 1777 he was raised to the peerage in 1797 and became High Steward of Great Yarmouth in 1807. He resided at Honingham Hall Norfolk. With the armorial bookplate of Charles Townshend Lord Bayning mounted on the front pastedown a contemporary annotation R/Y on the title page. The boards and spine have been rubbed causing most of the gold tooling to fade the corners of the boards are scuffed the head of the spine has been restored. Internally clean with only occasional soiling and foxing. Otherwise in good condition. Bonaventura & Abraham Elzevier, hardcover

194547585Breendonk: Amicale des Postiers Prisonniers Politiques Rescapés 1945. Original broadside pictorial diploma 24.5x32cm. printed lithograph on cream stock in red gilt and black accomplished in manuscript and rubberstamp. Minor foxing else a fresh Fine example. Exceedingly uncommon diploma awarded to a survivor of the Nazi prison camp at Fort Breendonk outside Antwerp. The camp generally held political prisoners members of the Resistance and Jews who were almost all subsequently dispersed to the larger concentration camp across Eastern Europe. More than 3000 prisoners passed through Breendonk of whom approximately ten percent died or were executed within its walls while half perished following deportation to other camps. The present certificate awarded to a member of the French resistance a mechanic outside Saumur in the Maine-et-Loire department of Western France his arrest part of a massive purge following the assassination of a Dr. Ritter representative of Gauleiter Sauckel in France see Colonel Remy "La Résistance en Anjou Touraine et Orléanais" 1975 Vol. 1 p. 103. The entire town of Saumur was later awarded the Croix de Guerre for its role in the resistance.

Certificate margins adorned with poignant vignettes of camp life men in striped uniforms awaiting execution working in the mines or caught in barbed wire fence. In the case of Huberdeau his first name here spelled "Villiam" he was awarded this diploma for "sa déportation dans le bagnes nazis" "his deportation to the nazi camps". Though no mention is explicitly made to Breendonk it appears that the award was given to survivors of that camp specifically. We find no other examples in the trade auction records of separately catalogued in OCLC as of February 2020. Amicale des Postiers Prisonniers Politiques Rescapés] unknown
