Recent sympathetic wrappers. 47 pp. On paper faintly tinted blue. 158 lots of paintings priced in a contemporary hand 46 lots of non-paintings unpriced which consist of lots of china sculpture lacquerware and engravings. ¶ Priced copy of a notable sale which included many Dutch and Flemish masterpieces including a fabulous Rubens "Ascension of the Virgin Mary" lot 63 which was knocked down to the Comte d'Ardenburg for 10000 francs. Lot 111 Willem van de Velde II "Entrance to a Dutch Port" is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York Accession Number: 20.155.6 - Bequest of William K. Vanderbilt 1920. The collector Francois Pauwels was a wealthy brewer in Brussels; he had a number of sales and after each one bought even more art sic! - The subtitle reveals additional useful information: "Catalogue rédigé par P. J. de Marneffe. La vente au plus offrant et dernier enchérisseur et au comptant se sera à Bruxelles le Fructidor an 11 correspondant au 22 Août 1083 i.e. 1803. v. st. et jours suivans de relevée dans la maison du défunt place des Wallons section 2 No. 249. L'exposition publique sera faite trois jours avant la vente depuis neuf heures du matin jusqu'à onze et l'après-midi depuis deux jusqu'à cinq." ¶ Only two copies are located in OCLC KMSKA & BnF only; to this census we add one more KM Brussels. ¶ Lugt 6682. ¶ Ours is the only copy currently on the market. 22688Brussels Belgium. Asiles des Soldats Invalides Belges. Circa 1917 or 1918. An unusual piece of First World War ephemera a nicely-printed notebook intended for correspondence produced to raise funds for the charity. 48pp 12mo each page printed on its own leaf of wove paper. The leaves are perfect bound at the head notebook-style into grey card printed wraps but with the glue now brittle and with the leaves now detached from the wraps and with some leaves now loose. The first leaf carries a full page headed 'Asiles des Soldats Invalides Belges' with text in small print by the Président Henri de Schoonen explaining the 'But de l'Oeuvre' beginning with 'Construction de maisons pour les invalides dans les communes où ils ont habité precedemment' beneath a list of the names of the charity's officers all within a decorative border. The other 47 pages have as letterheads reproductions of German proclamations and other documents relating to the war some printed in colour dating from between 1914 and 1917 and of illustrations by L. Huygens of war devastation each page with the emblem of the Asiles des Soldats Invalides Belges at bottom left. Each image is duplicated several times. Laid down on the front cover as part of the design is a reproduction of the 1915 German proclamation condemning Edith Cavell and others to death and the back wrap reproduces a 'Chant Patriotique Belge' in French and Dutch. Printed at the head of the front cover was an armorial shield with motto 'OEIL POUR OEIL DENT POUR DENT' but with the shield cut away to leave only the motto. Otherwise the item is a good survival aged and worn but in fair overall condition with no manuscript additions. The front cover see image is the Proclamation senencing Edith Cavell and others to death for treason. No other copy traced. [Brussels, Belgium.] Asiles des Soldats Invalides Belges.
